Modeling acute impact of sulfamethoxazole on the utilization of simple and complex substrates by fast growing microbial culture

Abstract: BACKGROUND: This study involved model evaluation of the acute impact of sulfamethoxazole on utilization of peptone mixture and acetate by fast growing microbial cultures under aerobic conditions. These substrates were selected to represent complex and readily biodegradable organic carbon sources, respectively. Acclimated biomass was obtained from two fill/draw reactors sustained at a sludge age of 2 days, one fed with peptone mixture and the other with acetate. Acute inhibition was tested in two parallel sets … Show more

“…The dual hydrolysis concept in the model structure was justified as the calibration procedure identified two slowly biodegradable COD components, S H1 and S H2 with maximum hydrolysis rates k H 1 and k H 2 of 2.8 d −1 and 0.8 d −1 , respectively. These results confirm findings on the same substrate previously reported in the literature; they also provide experimental support for the arguments that the peptone mixture is quite capable of simulating domestic wastewater both in terms of COD fractionation and biodegradation characteristics of different fractions …”

“…Biodegradability of the OMW when mixed into a wastewater was essentially tested on the basis of oxygen uptake rate (OUR) profiles generated in respirometric measurements, as in many similar studies . Experiments included an initial run conducted with only peptone mixture addition, which served as the control for all the other mixtures containing pretreated OMW in selected dilutions.…”

“…In conventional inhibition kinetics, the increase in half saturation coefficients are classified as competitive inhibition based upon enzyme analogy . (ii) Significant increase in the endogenous decay rate from 0.12 day ‐1 in the control reactor to 0.25 day ‐1 upon first exposure to SMX both for nitrifiers and heterotrophic biomass: this increase was previously reported for heterotrophic biomass under acute impact of SMX . Exposure to antibiotics activates a defense mechanism, which requires higher maintenance energy.…”

“…However, lab scale treatment systems operated with specific operational conditions have achieved partial degradation and co‐metabolism of SMX. The adverse effects of SMX were mainly investigated with the comparison of process kinetics and the change of microbial composition in carbon removal systems where the microbial community was dominated by heterotrophic bacteria . However, research on the impact of SMX on the nitrification mechanism is limited to a few studies …”
