Model Reference Adaptive Control for Milk Fermentation in Batch Bioreactors

Abstract: This paper presents the advanced control theory’s original utilisation to realise a system that controls the fermentation process in batch bioreactors. Proper fermentation control is essential for quality fermentation products and the economical operation of bioreactors. Batch bioreactors are very popular due to their simple construction. However, this simplicity presents limitations in implementing control systems that would ensure a controlled fermentation process. Batch bioreactors do not allow the inflow/o… Show more

“…Reference [23] presents the control of CO2 production based on a linear controller, which generates a control input for the heating/cooling system. In [24] the dissolved CO2 concentration is controlled by using the elementary model reference adaptive controller. All four references (21)(22)(23)(24) show the use of linear or nonlinear controllers, which are basically intended for controlling linear processes.…”

“…In [24] the dissolved CO2 concentration is controlled by using the elementary model reference adaptive controller. All four references (21)(22)(23)(24) show the use of linear or nonlinear controllers, which are basically intended for controlling linear processes. Nevertheless, the obtained simulation and experimental results prove that the regulators control the considered nonlinear fermentation process satisfactorily.…”

“…Reference [30] shows the implementation of the PI-controller. Reference [31] studies the application of model reference adaptive control. The absence of publications studying the control of the yield of the fermentation product in batch bioreactors was also an additional motivation to work even more in-depth and intensively in this area.…”
