Mode of administration does matter: comparability study using IPAQ

Abstract: Abstract--This study compared all-domains and domain-specific physical activity scores assessed through four variations of the IPAQ long version: (a) typical week, administered by an interviewer; (b) typical week, self-administered; (c) past seven days, interviewer-administered; (d) past seven days, self-administered. The sample included 38 physical education college students. Self-reported scores were in general twice higher than interview-administered scores, regardless the recall period used. In terms of do… Show more

“…Among the two questionnaires, the GPAQ assesses PAL using face‐to‐face interviews, whereas the generic version of IPAQ (short and long version) is usually a self‐administered format. In this regard, a study reported that the self‐administered IPAQ scored two‐times higher PAL when the same questionnaire was used as the interviewer‐administered format 35 . In addition to these, the GPAQ assesses PAL using show cards of different PA that takes into account the local features of the surveyed population 20,36 .…”

“…LTPA was assessed from 1965 to 2013. Data collected in (age 44 sweep) and 2004 (age 46 sweep) regarding to LTPA were not used in this study because they were assessed by different interview methods (self-reported and telephone-based interview, respectively), which may decrease signi cantly both reliability and comparability of measurements [17]. All included LTPA data were assessed by face-to-face interview-administered paper-based questionnaire.…”

“…On the other hand, the IPAQ is a widely used tool for assessment of physical activity and time spent sitting. It can be used in large study populations since it is inexpensive, simple and non-invasive [6,18,19,21,22]. Its validity and reliability have been proven in numerous studies [6,[23][24][25].…”

“…Its validity and reliability have been proven in numerous studies [6,[23][24][25]. Moreover, to avoid the problem of misreporting due to a lack of understanding of the IPAQ questions [22], we introduced an interviewer to the study, so our results can be compared with other international studies.…”
