Exhaustive testing of wireless communication protocols on prototypical hardware is costly and time-consuming. An alternative approach is network simulation, which, however, often strongly abstracts from the actual hardware. Especially in the wireless domain, such abstractions often lead to inaccurate simulation results. Therefore, we propose a code-transparent discrete event simulator that enables a direct simulation of existing code for wireless prototypes. With a focus on lower layers of the communication stack, we enable a parametrization of the simulation timings based on real-world measurements to increase the simulation accuracy. Our evaluation shows that we achieve close results for throughput (deviation below 3 % for UDP) and latency (corrected deviation about 13 %) compared to real-world setups, while providing the benefits of code-transparent simulation, i.e., to flexibly simulate large topologies with existing prototype code. Moreover, we demonstrate that our approach finds implementation defects in existing hardware prototype software, which are otherwise difficult to track down in real deployments.

In this paper we present the first cross-layer analysis of wireless LANs operating under downlink multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO), considering the fundamental role played by closedloop (TCP) traffic. In particular, we consider a scenario in which the access point transmits on the downlink via MU-MIMO, whereas stations must employ single-user transmissions on the uplink, as is the case in IEEE 802.11ac. With the help of analytical models built for the different regimes that can occur in the considered system, we identify and explain crucial performance anomalies that can result in very low throughput in some scenarios, completely offsetting the theoretical gains achievable by MU-MIMO. We discuss solutions to mitigate the risk of this performance degradation and alternative uplink strategies allowing WLANs to approach their maximum theoretical capacity under MU-MIMO.

The advances in physical layer technology has led to the performance upgradation of wireless local area networks (WLANs). More recently, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) is considered to be a key technology to enable high data rate transmission in WLANs. However, the actual benefit of this approach can be utilized, if there is an appropriate mechanism to select and schedule the users. Also, providing Quality of Service (QoS) support to user demands has become a major task in WLANs. In this paper, a two-level user scheduling approach for WLANs is discussed and its performance is evaluated using high-transmission rates with the assumption of frequency selective fading. For the purpose of comparison, some well-known medium access control (MAC) scheduling schemes are considered. It is shown that, the proposed scheme enhances throughput and achieves fairness among the users. Further, this scheme can be used to reduce contention during the acquisition of channel feedback.
