Modalities of Clinical Exercise Testing

Abstract: Currently, clinical exercise testing is increasingly utilized in clinical practice in order to optimize patient management and provide answers to questions not available from resting cardiopulmonary tests. There are several modalities of clinical exercise testing designed to evaluate and to answer different clinical question(s). The selection of clinical exercise testing modality should be based on the clinical question, facilities and expertise available including consideration of the cost effectiveness of th… Show more

“…CPET is used to aid clinical decision making relating to a range of pathologies. Some of the uses of CPET include: providing a differential diagnosis of exercise intolerance and unexplained dyspnoea,4 evaluating the severity of heart failure and the impairment caused by COPD,4 and as pre-operative risk stratification tool used before cardiopulmonary and non-cardiopulmonary surgery 4 5. It is this latter use of CPET—its role in evaluating perioperative risk in non-cardiopulmonary surgery—which forms the topic of the current review.…”
