The upper, lower and third eyelids are accessory organs of the eye. The aim of this study was to describe the development of the upper, lower and third eyelids in ostriches in the embryonic and postnatal period and to characterise the conjunctivaassociated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in the eyelids. The study was performed on 59 African black ostriches from the 28 th day of incubation up to 3 years of age. Hematoxylin and eosin, Azan trichrome, van Gieson trichrome and Mallory's trichrome stainings were used to demonstrate the structure of the eyelids. The connective tissue structure transformed from loose connective tissue into dense connective tissue during the development of the eyelids. In the third eyelid, the network of collagen fibres was rebuilt and the density of the collagen fibres decreased with age. As the animals grew, there were clearly visible changes in the structure of the upper and lower eyelids, especially in the stratified squamous epithelium of the skin surface, the conjunctival epithelium and the tarsal plate. The lymphatic follicles were observed only in the lower eyelid of adult ostriches. A diffuse CALT system with scattered lymphatic cells was observed within the connective tissue of the third eyelid, mostly under the conjunctival epithelium in the group of adult birds.

Harderian gland, histology, histochemistry, common pheasant, hybrid of Italian amber and common pheasant. ABStRACtThe aim of the present study was to demonstrate the histological and histochemical structure of the Harderian gland in wild and hybrid of wild and domestic birds. The samples were stained with haematoxylin-eosin, methyl green-pyronin Y, periodic acid-Schiff, alcian blue pH 2.5, aldehyde fuchsin and Hale's dialyzed iron staining's. In both species, the glands had multilobar tubuloacinar structure type I. The Harderian gland was located in the orbit near the inter-orbital septum, between the medial rectus muscle, the pyramidal muscle of the third eyelid, and the ventral oblique muscle. In the common pheasant, the gland was wider in the proximal and distal part. The common pheasant had more elongated lobes of the Harderian gland than in the hybrid. In the common pheasant, the glandular cells presented darkly-stained serous secretion and lightly-stained mucous secretion. In the hybrid, the glandular cells presented seromucous secretion. The central lobar space, interacinar space, and apical parts of the acini of the Harderian glands were filled with many lymphocytes and plasma cells, particularly in the common pheasant, where centers of all large lobes were abundantly filled with plasma cells. The plasma cells dominated in common pheasant's Harderian gland, while in the hybrid, lymphocytes and plasma cells were present at similar quantities. The cells positive for periodic acid of Schiff staining were dominant in hybrid. Periodic acid-Schiff, Hale's dialyzed iron and alcian blue pH 2.5 stainings demonstrated acid-carboxylated mucopolysaccharides in the glandular cells cytoplasm of the examined birds.

Mobilization of immunoglobulins (Igs)-containing plasma cells (IgA, IgG and IgM) in the spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus was investigated in broiler chickens that were vaccinated with Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine. In the thymus, the Igs-containing plasma cells were distributed in the cortex and medulla. Their frequency and distribution were higher at D 14 and at D 28 . The number of IgG-and IgM-positive cells was greater than IgA-positive cells in thymus. In the bursa of Fabricius, Igs-containing plasma cells were distributed beneath the capsules; within and around the bursal follicles. Their frequency of occurrence significantly peaked at D 14 and at D 28 in comparison to day-old chickens, and IgG-positive cells were significantly greater than the IgA-and IgM-positive cells in the bursa of vaccinated chickens. In the spleen, Igs-containing plasma cells were distributed in the white pulp, around the trabeculae, and in the periarterial lymphatic sheath. In this secondary lymphatic tissue, IgG-and IgM-positive cell numbers significantly greater than IgA-positive cells. In conclusion, mobilization of more Igs-positive cells in lymphoid tissues of broiler chickens is due to the effect of NDV vaccine as well as the advancement of age.ª 2014 Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V. on behalf
