This article examines the representation of Indonesian young female Muslims in Asma Nadia’s works. While previous studies have drawn dynamic transition in real life, this study provides an alternative narrative of being a young female Muslim in Islamic fiction in the context of simultaneous contemporary development in Indonesia with the raising of public piety. This study employed textual analysis method by making categories based on specific themes and understanding each conversation, storyline, and setting of Nadia’s three works, namely “Assalamualaikum Beijing” (“May Peace Be With You, Beijing”), “Jilbab Traveller: Love Sparks in Korea,” and “OTW Nikah” (“On The Way to Marriage”). The author concludes that Asma Nadia places moral anxiety and faith primacy as a frame young female Muslims experience. Moral anxiety reflects a dilemma of the proper way and advantageous outcome to achieve a successful transition. Faith primacy describes a set of spirits for connecting Islamic values and virtuous roles in each life stage. Furthermore, like many popular cultures containing the ideology of contestation, Asma Nadia’s works also provide a discourse about an ideal image that potentially influences and forms the imagination of readers.

Artikel ini membahas mengenai perdebatan perspektif transisi dalam kajian kepemudaan. Dengan menggunakan studi pustaka, artikel ini menjelaskan empat hal yaitu terkait transisi berdasarkan umur vs dimensi sosiologis, terkait dengan dilema struktur-agensi, terkait dengan transisi vs generasi, relevansi interseksionalitas dalam kajian empiris transisi pemuda di Indonesia serta kemungkinan mewujudkan perspektif transisi yang berspirit dialog global. Penggunaan perspektif yang tunggal tidak memungkinkan dalam memahami transisi kaum muda Indonesia kontemporer. Hasil analisis dalam artikel ini justru mengusulkan mengenai pentingnya interseksi berbagai macam variabel baik kelas sosial, gender, spasial, generasi dan perubahan, serta aplikasinya dalam konteks sosio-kultural-historis yang baru. Dalam artikel ini juga dijelaskan mengenai pentingnya perspektif transisi melakukan kontekstualisasi pada pengalaman kaum muda Indonesia sebagai bagian dari Global South, memunculkan narasi-narasi kaum muda terpinggirkan dengan prinsip epistepraxis sekaligus membangun dialog dalam rangka membangun kesepahaman transisi kaum muda sebagai manifestasi dari generasi muda global. This article examines the debates of youth transition perspective in youth studies. Using library research, this article explores four aspects related to youth transition perspective: firstly, the debates between age cohorts and sociological dimension of transition; secondly, the dilemma between structure and agency; thirdly, ongoing debates between transition versus generations, and lastly, the relevance of intersectionality in the empirical studies of youth transition and its chance to develop youth transition with a spirit of global dialogue. In this article, I also argue that it is impossible to understand the complexities of youth transition only with one perspective as a tool of analysis. In contrast, I suggest on the importance of intersections between class, gender, spatiality, generation and social change as well as critical contextualisation in the new socio-cultural-historical context. In this article, I also suggest the importance of contextualisation of youth transition perspective based on the lifeworld of Indonesian youth as a part of Global South countries, raising the voices of marginalized youth using concept of epistepraxis, as well as set up dialogues in order to build understanding on the experiences of young people’s transition as a manifestation of global youth generation.

Indonesian female migrant workers are a group that has over time experienced physical, psychological, and verbal violence in their jobs in foreign countries. The story presented of the struggles of this subordinated group of women remains one-sided and incomplete. The untold part of the story are the experiences they have encountered domestically from within their own country, Indonesia. This article argues that the subordinated position of Indonesian female migrant workers is initially created and strongly reinforced through the discrimination they face within specific social settings in the Indonesian context. One such social setting is at Indonesian international airports. Indonesian international airports are where the female migrant workers are positioned as “others”; rules put in place and their enforcement by airport officials and other passengers show the exclusion of female migrant workers from Indonesian society. Such positioning is an act of discrimination, exploitation, and exercise of power. This study examines what discourses are used in positioning these Indonesian female migrant workers in Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Jakarta. The authors argue, using research data and gender theories, that the positioning of Indonesian female migrant workers is a discursive act. It is committed by various individuals, particularly those (in the power system) that have the position of “we” and “us”, to preserve the social classes, which have become normalized throughout Indonesian history. The research found that the discrimination against female migrant workers is strongly connected to their social class. Although they have financial capital, their position is considered lower than other people in the airport, which creates multiple forms of discrimination, from material to symbolic discrimination and stereotypes.
