Mobile Edge as Part of the Multi-Cloud Ecosystem: A Performance Study

Abstract: Cloud computing has revolutionised the development and deployment of applications by running them cost-effectively in remote data centres. With the increasing need for mobility and micro-services, particularly with the emerging 5G mobile broadband networks, there is also a strong demand for mobile edge computing (MEC). It enables applications to run in small cloud systems in close proximity to the user in order to minimise latencies. Both cloud computing and MEC have their own advantages and disadvantages. Com… Show more

“…Due to power resources limitations of the mobile user equipment and the delay that occurs by offloading the application to centralized cloud (CC), European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) proposes a solution known as Mobile edge computing (MEC) [72]. The MEC brings the network of cloud servers, storage and processing resources, closer to the mobile device, which results in benefits to mobile operations, service providers and end users.…”

“…Melodic creates an infrastructure, upon which, applications can be implemented along with connection settings between their components. In Reference , the authors extended the Melodic middleware with an autonomic resource provisioning solution. The approach integrates multicloud and mobile edge computing into a MEC‐multicloud platform to enhance latency and scalability.…”

“…There is also an increasing interest among organizations to adopt DevOps for IoT application deployment to multi-cloud [8,9]. Multi-layer cloud and DevOps could prove useful for the IoT-applications that require frequent updates and real-time interactions with the IoT devices [10,11]. Hence, the question is how to develop, deploy and govern IoT applications to multi-cloud within the overall parameters of the existing organization ecosystem?…”
