A Survey on Video Streaming in Multipath and Multihomed Overlay Networks

Abstract: The focus of this survey is to study the protocols, mechanisms, and the latest standards proposed in the literature for improving the performance and quality of video content in multipath and multihomed overlay networks. Multipath is a broader term, but in the context of this survey, we define multipath as enhancing network routing technique by using various paths that are not necessarily completely disjoint. Multipath can furnish a variety of advantages such as reliability, connection persistence, increased pe… Show more

“…FEC can waste bandwidth because of the fixed redundancy rate that does not take into account the dynamism of the network. ARQ, on the other hand, uses retransmissions to compensate for lost traffic but can cause network congestion [11,12] and adversely affect multimedia quality [13]. Thus, it is not preferred for real-time traffic, especially in satellite transmission, which is characterized by long delays.…”

“…Multipath concurrent transmission technology, according to relevant research [8,9], may effectively increase wireless network transmission performance. One of the issues is receiver buffer blockage that is investigated by improving CMT's quality of service by implementing a suggested retransmission path selection mechanism [10].…”

“…DASH is an open-source standard that provides a series of guidelines and best practices. It is agnostic to audio/video codecs and is generally flexible to different implementations [6,7]. The reliable communications design philosophy of TCP allows for adapting to the heterogeneous nature of the Internet.…”

“…At the same time, video codecs are continuously evolving. Traditional video coding techniques generate a single video bitstream associated with a specific characteristic (such as framerate, resolution, or quantization) [7]. However, a new approach called scalable codification works differently; it generates a multilayer video bitstream divided into one main independent low-quality stream and one or multiple substreams (which depend on the mainstream).…”
