In non-terrestrial networks, where low Earth orbit satellites and user equipment move relative to each other, line-of-sight tracking and adapting to channel state variations due to endpoint movements are a major challenge. Therefore, continuous line-of-sight estimation and channel impairment compensation are crucial for user equipment to access a satellite and maintain connectivity. In this paper, we propose a framework based on actor-critic reinforcement learning for traffic scheduling in non-terrestrial networks scenario where the channel state is non-stationary due to the variability of the line of sight, which depends on the current satellite elevation. We deploy the framework as an agent in a multipath routing scheme where the user equipment can access more than one satellite simultaneously to improve link reliability and throughput. We investigate how the agent schedules traffic in multiple satellite links by adopting policies that are evaluated by an actor-critic reinforcement learning approach. The agent continuously trains its model based on variations in satellite elevation angles, handovers, and relative line-of-sight probabilities. We compare the agent’s retraining time with the satellite visibility intervals to investigate the effectiveness of the agent’s learning rate. We carry out performance analysis while considering the dense urban area of Paris, where high-rise buildings significantly affect the line of sight. The simulation results show how the learning agent selects the scheduling policy when it is connected to a pair of satellites. The results also show that the retraining time of the learning agent is up to 0.1times the satellite visibility time at given elevations, which guarantees efficient use of satellite visibility.

Due to bandwidth and time limits, delivering high-quality video streaming facility offers real-time wireless networks, but assuring quality of experience (QoE) is rather difficult. A network host can deliver its data stream via numerous different network pathways. At the same time, using multipath data transmission, where video streaming may be supplied through Internet protocols (IPs) as well as broadband with bidirectional communication between video sources and consumers, is one way to address this difficult problem. In this work, a novel framework is developed for wireless heterogeneous networks for video streaming applications using concurrent multipath transfer (CMT). The performance of frame-level delay can be enhanced for better video quality using this proposed method. The network congestion on end-to-end path utilised in CMT is not dependent of one another, and we operate under prior assumption that receiver’s announced window does not limit the sender. The analytical results show that the proposed framework outperforms existing methods in terms of performance with minimum retransmission delay.

Multimedia video streaming is the most used data consumption service on the Internet. Maintaining a data flow rate that provides the best video quality possible without overflowing the pipeline is challenging. Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a commonly used protocol that sends video data in small packages called chunks. However, this technique can lead to video buffering issues and video pausing due to an empty video buffer. Adaptive Scalable Video Streaming (ASViS) is a more versatile protocol that uses scalable video coding, a flow-controlled user datagram protocol (UDP), and deadline-based criteria to manage the buffered data. Like transmission control protocol (TCP), ASViS adjusts the flow based on available bandwidth, and it can discard data based on video frame deadlines to prevent outdated data transmission. ASViS is compliant with RFC 8085, preventing it from overwhelming the Internet. The scalability feature allows ASViS to have the highest image quality possible in every frame allowed by SVC with the data layers available. A theoretical model is presented that predicts ASViS behavior under different network conditions. This work also shows how different parameters affect its performance and how it can be easily configured to optimize it.
