Mo1–xWxSe2-Based Schottky Junction Photovoltaic Cells

Abstract: We developed Schottky junction photovoltaic cells based on multilayer MoWSe with x = 0, 0.5, and 1. To generate built-in potentials, Pd and Al were used as the source and drain electrodes in a lateral structure, and Pd and graphene were used as the bottom and top electrodes in a vertical structure. These devices exhibited gate-tunable diode-like current rectification and photovoltaic responses. MoWSe Schottky diodes with Pd and Al electrodes exhibited higher photovoltaic efficiency than MoSe and WSe devices wi… Show more

“…Under illumination and without external bias ( V ds = 0), the built‐in electric field separates the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thus resulting in a measurable photocurrent (short‐circuit current, I sc ). The carriers of opposite polarities in distinct parts of the device accumulate with the circuit opening, and thus a voltage is generated (open circuit voltage, V oc ) …”

“…We will demonstrate that TMDC alloys host a tunable band gap and CB/VB levels, beneficial for many applications. 65 In these systems, both the Mo/W ratio and distribution are crucial and define the properties of the crystal. 22 It is therefore essential to understand their surface conductivity down to the nanometer scale.…”

“…Optical absorbers play a key role in a variety of applications such as photodetectors, 1 microbolometers, 2 thermal imagers, 3 and solar energy conversion. 4,5 At optical frequencies, narrowband optical absorbers based on Fabry-Perot cavities 6,7 have been used for resonant cavity-enhanced photodetectors and similar devices. However, Fabry-Perot cavity-based absorbers are not very thin compared to the wavelength of light and are often narrowband or highly sensitive to the angle of incidence.…”
