MMT and LDH organo-modification with surfactants tailored for PLA nanocomposites

Abstract: Abstract. Low molecular weight polyesters were end-functionalized with ammonium and carboxylate salts and used in ionic exchange reactions with respectively cationic (MMT) and anionic (LDH) clays. The hybrid organic-inorganic substrates were structurally analysed to determine the ester oligomers' modification degree and their thermal behaviour owing to confinement effects. The dispersion of such hybrids in polylactic acid (PLA) matrix was performed and the ultimate structural, morphological and thermal propert… Show more

“…The positive charge of the layers is balanced by intercalated hydrated anions [25]. Unmodified HT, as well as commercial or ad hoc modified HT, have been extensively used as filler for PLA based nanocomposites [26][27][28][29][30][31]. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge no work investigated how the reprocessing affects the properties of PLA/HT nanocomposites.…”

“…Organomodification increases the gallery spacing of LDHs because LDHs and the organic polymer matrix are basically incompatible. In the past two decades, many reports on the intercalation of organic anions into LDHs have appeared …”

“…In the past two decades, many reports on the intercalation of organic anions into LDHs have appeared. 8,12,13 Because of the growing use of PET in the plastics industry (especially for beverage bottles), resource depletion and ecology destruction problems have emerged. For environmental conservation, it has become necessary to promote ecofriendly industries and to recycle the waste products.…”

“…Montmorillonite (MMT) is a cost-effective additive in polymers and currently the most researched filler for polymer composites. The use of MMT and graphene individually as nanofiller in the polymer matrix has been well established and available in the literature (Alexandre et al, 2000;Arroyo et al, 2010;Bijarimi et al, 2019;2020;Coiai et al, 2017;Gonçalves et al, 2016;Jalalvandi et al, 2015;Keramati et al, 2016;Li et al, 2017;Manafi et al, 2014;Pinto et al, 2016;Sabzi et al, 2015;Scaffaro et al, 2016;Sharma et al, 2018;Young et al, 2018). Nevertheless, there is a limitation for polymer nanocomposites based on MMT alone, such as brittleness and thermal conductivity.…”
