K-MM radiative Auger (RA) spectra have been measured for several compounds containing K and Ca. Transition energies are evaluated by the use of various sources: the DV-X α calculation, term values from optical spectroscopy, and L-MM Auger energies. It is shown that the DV-X α calculation is very useful in the understanding of RA spectra; calculated transition energies agree well with observed ones as well as those estimated from optical data, giving an unambiguous assignment for the observed spectra. On the other hand, transition energies evaluated from L-MM Auger energies sometimes disagree with others. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

The KM M radiative Auger (RA) x-ray spectra of solid Ca were induced by monochromatic synchrotron radiation and measured with a high-resolution von Hamos bent crystal spectrometer.Two excitation energies were employed, one in the near K threshold region and the second well above the K absorption edge. The KM M RA spectral structure and relative intensity with respect to the diagram Kβ 1,3 (K − M 3,2 ) line are found to be independent of the excitation energy. The overall RA structure resembles the density of unoccupied s-, p-and d-states. Due to solid state effects, however, spectral features resulting from the major discrete shake-up transitions could not be resolved. For the total KM M RA to Kβ 1,3 yield ratio, a value of 0.053(3) is obtained. The latter is compared to theoretical predictions and available experimental data obtained by various types of target excitation.

Hard X‐ray photon‐in photon‐out techniques are targeted at applications where the sample environment cannot be freely chosen. The resultant X‐ray emission spectra are influenced by the chemical environments of the atoms involved. If high‐resolution measurements are possible, the chemical effects in the X‐ray emission spectra can provide information about the chemical states, complementary to that offered by other X‐ray spectroscopies. X‐ray emission is classified into six categories for convenience: X‐ray diagram lines, X‐ray valence‐band emission, radiative Auger effect, resonant X‐ray emission, Compton scattering, and X‐ray Raman scattering. After a brief description of the history of research on these types of emission, the chemical effects that they reveal and related topics, including high‐resolution absorption measurements and the static structure factor, are reviewed. An overview of the instrumentation employed in both laboratories and synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities is also given.
