Mixed Germ Cell Tumor with Embryonal Carcinoma, Choriocarcinoma, and Epithelioid Trophoblastic Tumor in the Ovary of a Cynomolgus Monkey

Abstract: A seven-year-old female cynomolgus monkey had a mass in the left ovary with metastasis to the lung and the right ovary. The mass of these organs showed three different characteristics, and its immunohistochemical profiles were consistent with embryonal carcinoma (EC), choriocarcinoma (CC), and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT). The EC was characterized with sheets and glandlike structures with large pleomorphic, single-nucleated epithelial cells that were immunohistochemically positive for α-fetoprotein, o… Show more

“…In this case, the immunohistochemical findings in the mesometrium were similar to findings reported on typical simian choriocarcinoma cells, as shown in the immunohistochemistry for CK7, hCG and α-inhibin [13]. However, the finding that not all the tumor cells in the mesometrium were positive for hCG suggests that a limited number of invasive tumor cells have choricarcinomatous features.…”

“…The diagnosis of a choriocarcinoma-like component necessitates demonstration of trophoblastic differentiated cells, which generally express chorionic gonadotropin [2, 3, 7, 13]. In this case, the immunohistochemical findings in the mesometrium were similar to findings reported on typical simian choriocarcinoma cells, as shown in the immunohistochemistry for CK7, hCG and α-inhibin [13].…”

“…17 In addition, nongestational PSTT and ETT have been reported in nonhuman primates. [18][19][20] Although teratomatous elements were not identified in the nongestational ETT in our series, it is possible that such elements were not found due to sampling issues or possible overgrowth of a teratomatous component. Regardless, genotyping established that the tumor was nongestational.…”

“…Trophoblastic tumors are rare neoplasms in domestic and laboratory animal species, and in non-human primates have been reported in the uterus and ovary (Chu et al 2007; Cooper et al 2005; Farman et al 2005; Giusti et al 2005; Marbaix et al 2008; Marr-Belvin et al 2010; Toyosawa et al 2000; Yokouchi et al 2011) In humans, most occur following a normal or ectopic pregnancy, abortion, or molar pregnancy (Bentley 2003; Hui et al 2014). These are comprised of placental site trophoblastic tumors (PSTTs), epithelioid trophoblastic tumors (ETTs), and choriocarcinomas (CC).…”
