“…Nonetheless, in revegetation trials recruitment success is not the only criteria in choosing appropriate source populations (Broadhurst et al., ; Hufford & Mazer, ). Size and genetic structure of source populations are also crucial criteria to be considered (Broadhurst et al., ; Bucharova et al., ). Though Reserva, together with Hinojos and Hato Ratón, showed the highest number of recruits by the end of our study, P. bourgaeana density at Reserva is between 2 and 34 times lower than in other localities (Appendix ).…”

“…Our approach should be optimal for many other systems world‐wide given that it integrates several key aspects required for long‐term restoration success, such as forecasted provenance and sowing site specific recruitment success, density of source populations and the enhancement of the planting adaptive potential (Breed et al., ). Further, the potential costs in terms of outbreeding depression (sensu Hufford & Mazer, ) of the source‐mixing approach are expected to be low in systems where seed mixing would occur within moderate spatial scales (Bucharova et al., ; Frankham et al., ). Because heavily altered habitats and novel ecosystems are progressively the most frequent target of restoration actions (Hobbs, Higgs, & Harris ), the use of local seeds is not longer appropriate in many cases, being source mixing a reasonable alternative (Jones, ).…”
