“…Light exposure of both GQDs and MB can cause increased SO generation (5,6,11,43,44,46). We found previously that light exposure of the 1:1 GQD:MB preparation produced enhanced SO production compared to either MB or GQD alone in PBS (11).…”

“…Our previous work suggested that light exposure of combinations of graphene quantum dots with methylene blue caused eradication of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (11). It seemed plausible to us that GQD-MB combinations could also be effective against cancer cells, which can be killed by SO and other ROS generated by graphene-based nanoparticles used in photodynamic therapy (6,9,20,43,44). We found that 24 h after light exposure, MCF-7 cell numbers were significantly reduced by the 1:1 GQD:MB preparation (8% of control; P ≤ 0.01), but that surprisingly, MB alone caused even lower cell survivability (4% of control; P ≤ 0.01) ( Fig.…”

“…The light-mediated cytotoxicity of GQDs, together with their energy-donor capacity, could therefore open a new area for GQD research in the life sciences -as direct theranostics or as cofactors or components of conventional photosensitizing agents used in PDT. Recent studies have investigated alternative syntheses and PDT-applicability of GQDs with encouraging results [25][26][27] .…”

“…[39][40] Mitochondria-targeting has attracted much attention for inducing mitochondriamediated apoptosis based on enhanced ROS generation, which can destroy the mitochondrial membrane, [41][42] resulting in effective therapeutic activity. [25,[43][44][45][46][47][48][49] Besides triphenylphosphonium and other lipophilic cations (ammonium), there are very few mitochondria-targeting agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of mitochondria-targeting in cells using WSONs of chlorin derivatives in PDT.…”
