Missionary Politics – A Contribution to the Study of Populism

Abstract

The sacralization of politics is commonly studied in terms of movements and regimes of the past. This article explains and develops the political-religious concept of missionary politics as an analytical tool to understand political activism in the twenty-first century. Missionary Politics is a political religion that has at its center a charismatic leadership, a narrative of salvation, ritualization, and the creation of a moral community invested with a collective mission of combating conspiratorial enemies and redeeming the community from its putative crisis. Ongoing research regarding missionary politics demonstrates the continuing importance of the sacralization of the political, which manifests itself in many ways, in contemporary times.

Populizmus, egyházak és oktatáspolitika a 2010 utáni Magyarországon

“…A populizmus és a vallás kapcsolata viszonylag kevéssé kutatott terület (DeHanas-Shterin 2018; Zúquete 2013), arról pedig még kevesebb kutatás áll rendelkezésre, hogy a tartósan, több cikluson keresztül kormányzó populista kormányzatoknak hogyan alakul az egyházhoz fűződő viszonyuk, illetve hogyan hat az egyházakra, a hitéletre és a hívőkre a vallás politizálódása. Zúquete (2013) használja a vallásos populizmus fogalmát, meg különböztetve a nyíltan, illetve burkoltan vallásos populizmusvariációkat. Előbbi azokra a muszlim országokra vonatkozik, ahol a kormány a vallást átpolitizálva a politikai ha talmát azzal legitimálja, hogy Isten nevében járnak el annak ellenségeivel szemben.…”
