Mismatch negativity is abnormal but not lateralizing in temporal lobe epilepsy

Abstract: We investigated the changes of mismatch negativity (MMN) in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and explored the possible role of MMN in lateralizing their seizure focus. Thirty patients with TLE and thirty healthy controls were included. MMN was elicited in each subject. Patients with TLE were divided into three subgroups: unilateral left TLE; unilateral right TLE, and bilateral TLE. MMN amplitudes and latencies were compared between the patients with TLE and the control group, and also among the three… Show more

“…The MMSE scale ranges from 0 to 30, with higher scores indicating better cognitive function. This task has also been used in previous studies of epilepsy . Social functioning was assessed using the socioeconomic status (SES) of the participants measured by the 5‐point Hollingshead–Redlich Scale, in which 1 = highest and 5 = lowest .…”

“…This task has also been used in previous studies of epilepsy. 30,31 Social functioning was assessed using the socioeconomic status (SES) of the participants measured by the 5-point Hollingshead-Redlich Scale, 32 in which 1 = highest and 5 = lowest. This scale was scored based on the occupational and educational levels that may be seriously affected in TLE.…”

“…The procedure of eliciting MMN is identical to our previous study [16]. The odd-ball paradigm was applied with brief pure tones as the stimuli.…”
