miRNAs as Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Current Perspectives

Abstract: Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Up to 85% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed as nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The effectiveness of NSCLC treatment is expected to be improved through the implementation of robust and specific biomarkers. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding molecules that play a key role in the regulation of basic cellular processes, including differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis, by controlling gene expression at the post-transcriptional level.

“…It is known that aberrant expression or mutations of miRNAs are crucial for the development of cancer . These important roles of miRNAs in human cancers provide novel biomarkers or targets for cancer diagnosis and treatments . For example, miR‐21 was reported to be capable of conferring chemoresistance of advanced pancreatic cancer .…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are one type of small non‐coding RNAs which can modulate gene expression at post‐transcriptional level in various cancers . In NSCLC, many miRNAs have been revealed to be involved in the cancer carcinogenesis by functioning as tumor suppressors or oncogenes, and miRNAs are potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets in NSCLC . Recently, the important roles of the lncRNA‐miRNA‐mRNA regulatory network and a protein‐protein interaction network have also been identified in the development of NSCLC .…”
