MiR-153 regulates metastases of gastric cancer through Snail

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in tumorigenesis and cancer metastases of gastric carcinoma (GC). Recently, miR-153 was reported as a tumor suppressor miRNA silenced in GC, whereas the underlying mechanisms are much lacking. Here, we reported that miR-153 levels were significantly decreased and Snail levels were significantly increased in GC specimens, compared to paired adjacent non-tumor gastric tissue. Moreover, the levels of miR-153 and Snail were inversely correlated. Bioinformatics analyses and lu… Show more

“…By contrast, miR-153 inhibited the proliferation and invasion of human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells by inhibiting the expression of kruppel-like factor 5 (21). miR-153 may inhibit cell migration and invasion of gastric cancer cells by directly targeting Snail (22). A tumor suppressor function of miR-153 was revealed in glioblastoma (23).…”

“…In different types of human cancer, miR-153 appears to be involved in either promoting or suppressing tumor growth and progression (20)(21)(22). Wu et al (20) revealed that miR-153 promoted prostate cancer cell proliferation by targeting PTEN.…”

“…Furthermore, the downregulation of miR-153 accelerates epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) via the regulation of the Snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAI1) expression level ( 23 ). Clinical analysis indicated that the low expression level of miR-153 in patients with gastric cancer was associated with poor prognosis and tumor metastasis ( 24 ). In addition, a previous report indicated that miR-153 expression was decreased in lung cancer tissues compared with that in adjacent noncancerous tissues ( 24 ).…”

“…Another example of miRNA that is described as a direct regulator of SNAIL expression in plenty tumor types is miR-153. The downregulation of SNAIL by miR-153 suppresses human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma migration and invasion [75], melanoma cells proliferation and invasion [76], esophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression [77], and gastric cancer metastasis [78]; regulates EMT in hepatocellular carcinoma [79]; and diminishes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma migration and invasion with miR-153 serving as a prognostic marker [80].…”
