miR‐106b‐5p promotes aggressive progression of hepatocellular carcinoma via targeting RUNX3

Abstract: Background and ObjectivesThe roles of microRNA(miR)‐106b‐5p in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. We aimed here to investigate the clinical significance of miR‐106b‐5p expression in HCC and its underlying mechanisms.MethodsExpression levels of miR‐106b‐5p in 108 HCC clinical samples by quantitative real‐time reverse transcription PCR. Associations of miR‐106b‐5p expression with various clinicopathological features and patients' prognosis were evaluated by Chi‐square test, Kaplan‐Meier, and Cox prop… Show more

“…In this analysis, we focused on the top four OncoMMRs that had the largest number of targets (miR-106b-5p, miR-106a-5p, miR-671-5p, and miR-590-3p) ( Figure 6 ). The expression levels of this OncoMMRs have been widely associated with increased cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and radioresistance [ 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ] showing concordance with our results. Moreover, the top-four OncoMMRs mentioned before were highly enriched in genes involved in invasion and metastasis, suggesting a co-participation in this hallmark.…”

“…According to a previous study [ 24 ], miR-106b-5p promotes malignant melanoma progression possibly through targeting PTEN to regulate cell cycle-related proteins and Akt/ERK signaling pathway. MiR-106b-5p plays a carcinogenic role in hepatocellular carcinoma through regulating the target gene RUNX3 [ 25 ]. In addition, a recent clinical study incorporating 284 renal carcinoma patients showed that the expression of miR-106b-5p is negatively correlated with the overall survival of the patients, moreover, the study also indicated that miR-106b-5p expression was an independent predictor of poor prognosis in renal carcinoma patients [ 26 ].…”

“…Additionally, a previous study has revealed the important role of miRNAs in mouse models of asthma ( 12 ). miR-106b-5p has been associated with glioma tumorigenesis ( 13 ), lung cancer ( 14 ), chronic myeloid leukemia ( 15 ), breast cancer ( 16 , 17 ) and hepatocellular carcinoma ( 18 ). However, the molecular mechanisms of miR-106b-5p in asthma remain unclear.…”
