Introduction: Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is a common disorder that negatively effects the quality of life with symptoms due to the inflammation of nasal epithelium. Objective of this study is to determine the general demographical and clinical features of patients with AR, who had positive skin prick test (SPT) results. Methods: Patients diagnosed as AR with positive SPT results were analyzed. The allergens tested were: grasses, cereals+grasses, trees 1 (early flowering), trees 2 (late flowering), house-dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP), Dermatophagoides farinae (DF), tyrophagus putrescentiae (TP), lepidoglyphus destructor (LD) and acarus siro (AS). Results: Of the total 202 patients, 145 female (with a mean age of 32.42±12.81 years) and 57 male (with a mean age of 28.44±11.5 years) were included in the study. The most common allergens determined were; DF, DP, cereals+grasses and grasses. Tyrophagus significantly was more common in females (p=0.04). Nasal discharge, dyspnea, itching and weakness-tiredness were reported to be more common in females compared with males. DF, DP, TP and LD were statistically significantly more common in housewives (p<0.05). Dyspnea, wheezing and itching were statistically significantly more common in housewives (p<0.05). Discussion and Conclusion: Housewives are risky occupational group for the development of allergic rhinitis due to house dust mites.

Objective: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and bronchial asthma (AS) are two related clinical types of allergic respiratory diseases, and there is a necessity to define both allergies in terms of the associated allergens. Accordingly, a cross-sectional observational study was conducted to examine the allergen profile in AR and AS of Iraqi patients, in whom the data are not well-elaborated. Methods: During January 2014-April 2017, 653 AR and 521 AS patients were ascertained and their sera were assessed for total and specific IgE. Results: The 16-45 years was the most encountered age group in AR and AS patients (79.1 and 75.1%, respectively). For total IgE, AS patients at all age groups had a significantly higher level than in AR cases of both genders. However, total IgE level showed no significant variation between age groups with the exception of total AS patients in the age group > 45 years who had the lowest IgE level (338 ± 269 IU/ml). Screening the sera for eight allergen types (animal dander, grasses, house dust, insects, mites, molds, trees and weeds) depicted that molds were the most frequent allergen in AR and AS patients (8.7 and 19.6%, respectively), but mixed sources of allergens were much more frequently encountered. Conclusion:The age range 16-45 years is an important target for AR and AS. Molds (Alternaria alternate spores) as well as mixed allergens were the mostly encountered types in Iraqi AR and AS patients.

RESUMOObjetivos: Identificar os principais alérgenos aplicados em testes cutâneos para sensibilização atópica em pacientes com diagnóstico de asma e rinite alérgica. Métodos: Uma revisão sistemática foi realizada para identificar estudos clínicos nos últimos 10 anos, tendo como desfecho a utilização do teste cutâneo (prick test) no diagnóstico de asma e rinite alérgica. Foi realizada uma pesquisa nas bases de dados PubMed, Scielo e ScienceDirect. Foram incluídos artigos que abordam a utilização direta do teste cutâneo no diagnóstico das doenças alérgicas. Além disso, os estudos obrigatoriamente deveriam descrever o protocolo de utilização, bem como os alérgenos aplicados no teste. Para seleção dos artigos, três pesquisadores analisaram de forma independente os critérios de inclusão, sendo os mesmos analisados por mais dois revisores. Resultados: Treze instrumentos foram incluídos na sistemática, tendo uma variação expressiva na quantidade de reagentes (de 3 a 36 tipos). Dos 36, cinco possuíram a maior frequência de positividade à sensibilização (Artemisia vulgaris, Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, epitélios de cão e de gato). Como parte do protocolo de aplicação, a região do antebraço e o período de 15 a 20 minutos são os mais frequentes. Conclusões: Alérgenos mais comuns em alergia respiratória foram descritos, sendo importante levar em consideração a região e população investigadas.DESCRITORES: testes cutâneos; diagnóstico; asma; rinite. ABSTRACT Aims:To identify the major allergens used in skin tests for atopic sensitization in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Methods: A systematic review was performed to identify clinical studies in the past 10 years whose outcomes included the skin test (prick test) in the diagnosis of asthma and allergic rhinitis. The PubMed, SciELO, and ScienceDirect databases were searched and articles that addressed the direct use of skin testing in the diagnosis of allergic diseases were included. In addition, the studies had to describe the protocol and the allergens used in the test. For selection of the articles, three researchers independently analyzed the inclusion criteria, which were analyzed by two other reviewers. Results: Thirteen instruments were included in the systematic review, and the amount of reagents used varied significantly (between 3 and 36). Of the 36 reagents, five had the highest frequency of positive sensitization (Artemisia vulgaris, Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, dog and cat epithelia). As part of the application protocol, the forearm and the period of 15-20 minutes are the most frequently used. Conclusions:The most frequently detected allergens were described, and both the region and the studied population are important factors to be considered.
