Minimum cost solution of photovoltaic–diesel–battery hybrid power systems for remote consumers

Abstract: Hybrid systems present a new dimension to the time correlation of intermittent renewable energy sources. The paper considers the daily energy consumption variations for winter and summer weekdays and weekends in order to compare the corresponding fuel costs and evaluate the operational efficiency of the hybrid system for a 24-h period. Previous studies have assumed a fixed load and uniform daily operational cost. A load following diesel dispatch strategy is employed in this work and the fuel costs and energy f… Show more

“…In order for PV and wind systems to meet demand completely, there is a need for backup systems such as diesel generators (DGs), hydrogen FCs and battery storage in a hybrid system. Hybrid energy systems present a resolution to the time correlation of intermittent RE sources [4,5]. RE-based power systems are being deployed globally to provide autonomous power for various remote applications and also in grid-tied systems.…”

“…Moreover, DSM has become more significant for smart grids especially when renewable energy generation is introduced into the smart house. Photovoltaic (PV) generation, which has been widely applied as a type of renewable energy generation, can be installed in the common household for providing energy [13,14]. Since PV only works during daylight, PV generation usually requires a storage system to store the produced energy and then this storage provides energy for loads during peak hours to reduce the user's cost [15].…”

“…In Ref. [25], the proposed RESs, PV, diesel and battery, are sized optimally via quadratic programming approach. Kaabeche et al [26] presented an iterative optimization approach for optimal sizing of RESs such that achieving minimum energy load deficit.…”
