Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery in Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Abstract: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is responsible for half of the glaucoma-related blindness worldwide. Cataract surgery with or without trabeculectomy has been considered to be the first-line treatment in eyes with medically uncontrolled PACG. While minimally invasive glaucoma surgery has become an important surgical approach for primary open-angle glaucoma, its indications and benefits in PACG are less clear. This review summarizes the efficacy and safety profile of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery in … Show more

“…G laucoma following cataract surgery (GFCS) is one of the most sight-threatening postoperative complications of pediatric cataract surgery, and often becomes refractory to medical treatment [1] . Goniotomy has been an increasingly popular procedure for primary open angle glaucoma and primary angle-closure glaucoma with 120-, 240-, or 360-degree [2] . The 120-degree goniotomy and 360-degree goniotomy (gonioscopy and microcatheter-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy; GATT) have been reported effective for childhood glaucoma [3][4] .…”

“…3 Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery has become widely disseminated for the surgical treatment of glaucoma, particularly in POAG. [4][5][6] Goniotomy (GT), that is, ab interno trabeculotomy or trabecular meshwork-Schlemm canal (TM-SC) incision, a type of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, is characterized by good results and rapid recovery and is commonly used in clinical practice. 7,8 The GT includes treatment over 120 degrees with a Kahook Dual Blade (KDB, New World Medical) 9,10 or Tanito Microhook (Inami and Co, Ltd.) 11 or others.…”
