Minimally Invasive, Endoscopically Assisted Colostomy Can Be Performed Without General Anesthesia or Laparotomy

Abstract: No complications related to this technique were noted in this five-year review. Endoscopically assisted colostomy is an acceptable method for fecal diversion without the need for laparotomy and can be accomplished using a local or regional anesthetic with sedation.

“…In addition, there is a higher chance of wound infection and incisional hernia (1,16). Minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy, gasless or trephine technique avoid large abdominal incisions and therefore reduce postoperative pain, ileus, and wound complications (3)(4)(5)(6). Other advantages may include shorter hospital stay, and earlier initiation of other treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy in patients with locally advanced rectal or anal cancer.…”
