Miniaturized designs of circularly polarized slot antenna

Abstract: Designs of reducing the overall antenna size for a circularly polarized slot antenna are studied. The miniaturized design is based on a square‐ring slot antenna fed with an L‐shaped coupling strip, and it is performed by varying the slot shape and simultaneously cutting the ground plane. Two compact prototypes are implemented and measured. For the first one prototype, both the ring slot and ground plane have a narrow rectangular shape, and experimental results demonstrate that it can provide monopole‐like radi… Show more

“…On the other hand, it is feasible to generate a single-layer CP slot antenna by adjusting the geometrical topology of the slot configuration or the feeding line. Some of the prevalent reported methods use the following: an embedded inverted-L ground strips with an annular patch (Shirzad et al, 2014), an asymmetric T-shaped strip (Pan et al, 2012), a trapezoidal patch (Kalhor et al, 2012), an L-shaped strip with a cross-shaped ring-slot (Kumar & Sinha, 2009), a C-strip metal within the circular slot (Chen et al, 2012), a square ring-slot with an L-shaped strip (Row & Lin, 2014), and an open slot (Jan et al, 2013). For having an utilizable CP antenna with wide bandwidth, a simple structure, and compact size, planar configurations are critical characteristics.…”

“…For having an utilizable CP antenna with wide bandwidth, a simple structure, and compact size, planar configurations are critical characteristics. Some of these methods can widen the bandwidth but are complicated in practical works (Kumar & Sinha, 2009) Shirzad et al (2014), and Row and Lin (2014) have achieved CP property but have narrow axial ratio (AR) bandwidth that range from 4 to 27%. In addition, the proposed CP antennas are specified by a large size (Kumar & Sinha, 2009;Kalhor et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2012;Pan et al, 2012), or non-planar configuration (Kumar & Sinha, 2009;Pan et al, 2012).…”

“…In addition, truncation or corner stubs are the conventional methods for achieving UWB characteristics with circular polarization by coplanar waveguide feed (CPW) [23,24]. However, there exist various methods for generating circular polarization in slot antennas such as square-ring slot antenna fed with an L-shaped coupling strip for Wi-Fi application at 2.5 GHz [25], dual-square-ring-shaped slot for WiMAX applications at 3 GHz [26], and two-slot rings for 1.6 and 2.5 GHz [27]. CPW feed slot antennas are noticed for their facility of achieving circular polarization by means of two asymmetrical C-shaped strips with dual-band characteristics at 2.5 and 5.2 GHz [28] and corner truncated ground [29].…”
