Mini‐Mental State Examination: a normative study in Italian elderly population

Abstract: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a brief test to assess cognitive status, is heavily influenced by age and education. It was administered to 1019 elderly subjects (aged 65-89 years) living in three different Italian cities. “…The most widely accepted indicator of the presence of cognitive impairment was a score of ≤ 24. A cut-off score of 24 by age and educational level was selected using the score adjustment coefficients proposed by Magni et al (21). In this study, 4 levels of cognition status were described, including normal (25 to 30), mild cognitive impairment (20 to 24), moderate cognitive impairment (10 to 19), and sever cognitive impairment (≤ 9) (22).…”

“…At the initial visit, cognitive assessment was performed by a MiniMental State Examination 32 and by a comprehensive neuropsychological battery of validated paper-and-pencil tests standardized for Italian people 33 administered in a single session lasting ≈2 hours. Details are described Cognitive Pattern Assessment section of onlineonly Data Supplement and in Table S1 in the online-only Data Supplement.…”

“…The total score was corrected by age and educational level using the scoreadjustment coefficients proposed by Magni et al in the 1996. 8 A score <24.0 has been accepted as indicating the presence of CI. 9 All data were entered into Excel ® spreadsheets (Microsoft 2007) and analyzed with SPSS Statistics 20.0.…”
