Mineralization, involving vanadian-chromian silicates, has been studied in Lower Paleozoic, carbon-rich amphibole schists with pyrite and pyrrhotite near Pezinok, southwest Slovakia. A detailed electron microprobe study has revealed the presence of V,Cr-rich garnet, clinozoisite, and muscovite, associated with amphiboles (magnesiohornblende, tremolite, actinolite, and edenite), diopside, and albite. The garnet contains 5-19 wt% V 2 O 3 , 5-11 wt% Cr 2 O 3 , and 2-13 wt% Al 2 O 3 (16-64 mol% goldmanite, 19-36 mol% uvarovite, and 9-59 mol% grossular end-members). The garnet is unzoned or shows V-rich cores and Al-rich rims, or irregular coarse oscillatory zoning with V, Cr, and Al, locally involving Ca and Mn as well. The V,Cr-rich clinozoisite to mukhinite and "chromian clinozoisite" contains 2-9.5 wt% V 2 O 3 and 1.5-11 wt% Cr 2 O 3 ; the muscovite contains 2.5-8 wt% V 2 O 3 and 0-7 wt% Cr 2 O 3 . The mineralization originated from primarily V-, Cr-, and C-rich mafic pyroclastic rocks, affected by volcano-exhalative processes. These rocks were weakly metamorphosed during early Hercynian regional metamorphism (M1), followed by late-Hercynian contact metamorphism (M2) with crystallization of V,Cr-rich silicates, diopside, amphiboles, phlogopite, titanite, albite, quartz, carbonate, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The youngest Alpine(?) retrograde metamorphic event (M3) is connected with production of V,Cr-poor muscovite, clinochlore, clinozoisite, pumpellyite-(Mg), prehnite, quartz, and carbonates, under prehnite-pumpellite facies conditions.

Abstract--The composition and origin of vanadium-bearing clay minerals in the Jurassic (Morrison and Entrada Formations) sandstones of the Colorado Plateau are reassessed using microanalyses (microprobe and scanning electron microscope). The main V-clays are authigenic illite and chlorite of various petrologic habits: clay casts and matrix, pore lining, replacement of detrital grains. The chemical composition of the V-clays is similar in three different localities in the Morrison Formation separated by about 50 kin, suggesting that the V-clays are the result of a large regional event. In both illite and chlorite, A1 and V are inversely correlated, showing that V replaces AI in the octahedral position. The chlorite contains a complex mixture of divalent and trivalent cations that cannot fit within a sudoite structure. A classification of V-micas is proposed that employs V3+/sum of the octahedral cations vs. the sum of the interlayer charges. V-illite and roscoelite from the Colorado Plateau are characteristic of diagenetic/hydrothermal environments. For a given locality the composition of the V-clays does not vary with habit, showing that these minerals formed at thermodynamic equilibrium.

Vesuvianite from Pajsberg, Sweden contains about one atom of Mn, based on 50 cations per formula unit, and small amounts of Be, B, and As. Optical absorption analysis suggests that the Mn is predominantly or entirely trivalent. Crystalstructure analysis indicates that Mn is housed at the general octahedral site Y3, which exhibits only minor distortion from ideal octahedral symmetry. Arsenic is housed at Y2 and Z2, and the formula derived from electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS analyses suggests minor substitution of Al for Si, also at Z2. Beryllium and B are at T1, between the edge-sharing trimers Y3Y2Y3, as is the case for B in the boron-dominant vesuvianite species wiluite. The total content at T1 is interpreted as 0.82Be, 0.34B, and 0.037Fe 3þ .
