Mindfulness and intimate relationship satisfaction in daily life: The role of empathy

Abstract: This study examined the role of empathy in the relationship between mindfulness and intimate relationship satisfaction (IRS). Using ecological momentary assessment, 100 pairs of university students who were in relationships participated in the study. The participants were invited to complete a questionnaire measuring their current states of mindfulness, IRS, and empathy three times a day for 14 days. The results showed that empathy at the within‐person level played a mediating role in the relationship between … Show more

“…It should be noted that as a multifaceted construct, empathy varies from person to person (Coll et al, 2017 ). For instance, neurotic individuals are more prone to experience personal distress (PD; Guilera et al, 2019 ), while individuals with higher intimate relationship satisfaction are likely to have stronger empathic ability (Wen et al, 2022 ). Therefore, to rule out the possibility that any group difference in empathy comes from inherent differences between the two groups, such as personality, sociability, and romantic relationship, we also quantified these related variables using questionnaires that tap into these issues.…”

“…First, the cross-sectional nature of our study prevents any causal inferences among positive sexuality, relationship satisfaction, and health variables. Future studies are warranted to clarify temporal relationships through prospective designs, such as intensive repeated measures with ecological momentary assessment ( Wen et al, 2022 ; Pawłowska et al, 2023 ). Related to this, identifying central nodes within the networks as potential intervention targets could be improved by establishing their causal relationships with other symptoms ( Borsboom et al, 2021 ).…”
