Million year old ice found under meter thick debris layer in Antarctica

Abstract: Cosmogenic nuclide measurements associated with buried glacier ice in Ong Valley, in the Transantarctic Mountains, suggest the preservation of ancient ice. There are three glacial tills on the valley floor which have formed from the concentration of regolith contained within sublimating glacier ice. Two tills are less than 1 m thick and underlain by ice. Measurements of cosmogenic 10Be, 26Al, and 21Ne show that (i) the youngest buried ice unit and corresponding till are at least 11–13 ka, (ii) another ice unit… Show more

“…Nevertheless, boulders can become stable if the rock glacier mobility is very limited (Bibby et al . ). This suggests that CRE ages do not indicate the final activity of the rock glacier or its fossilization, but rather the survival of one of the surfaces of the boulder, which remains permanently exposed on a rock glacier with a large ice layer, but which is static or has low dynamism (Mackay & Marchant ).…”

“…Furthermore, blue ice areas have the potential to contain surface or shallow ice that is older than that recovered from deep drilling projects and can in some cases provide a higher temporal resolution (e.g. Sinisalo et al, 2007;Higgins et al, 2015;Bibby et al, 2016;Kehrl et al, 2018). Equally important, ice is available in large quantities, which is necessary for certain types of measurements, such as the characterization of trapped gasses and their isotopic composition (e.g.…”

“…CC BY 4.0 License. regions of Antarctica (Fukui et al, 2008;Hassinger and Mayewski, 1983;Bibby et al, 2016). Based on our results, it is likely that many ice-cored rock glaciers elsewhere in Antarctica record past glacial fluctuations, and can therefore be used to study climatic history during the Holocene and Pleistocene.…”
