Millimeter-Wave and UWB Over a Colorless WDM-PON Based on Polarization Multiplexing Using a Polarization Modulator

Abstract: A broadband millimeter-wave (mmW) at 60-GHz band and an impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) over a colorless 100-GHz dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) passive optical network (PON) that supports simultaneous transmission of a broadband mmW signal, a UWB signal and a wireline baseband signal is experimentally demonstrated. At the transmitter, a polarization modulator (PolM) is employed, which operates in conjunction with a polarization controller (PC) and a polarization beam splitter (PBS) as an e… Show more

“…Compared with previous studies [5][6][7][8][9][10][11], the proposed scheme has such merits. First, in a hybrid ONU (HONU), alternative access is realized only with a PC, polarization stabilizer, and polarization beam splitter (PBS) instead of the optical filters or interleaves (ILs) usually used in conventional schemes.…”

“…In [6], based on a tunable optical frequency comb (TOFC), a wired/wireless access integrated ROF-PON system was proposed; in this scheme, the wired and wireless data are, respectively, modulated on the optical center carrier and optical sidebands. A polarization multiplexing system is proposed to realize transmissions of a 1.25-Gbit/s mm-wave signal, a 1.25-Gbit/s ultra-wideband (UWB) signal, and a 10Gbit/s wireline signal over a 25-km single-mode fiber (SMF) carried by different wavelengths at the same time [7].…”

“…Much research has been targeted toward wireless distribution over passive optical networks (PONs) and various wireless standards including 3G, 3,4 LTE-A, 5 WiFi, [6][7][8] WiMAX, [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] and UWB [16][17][18][19] have been demonstrated overlaying on PON infrastructure. In addition to these wireless standards, a significant amount of work has also been targeted toward millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless signals' distribution.…”

“…In addition to these wireless standards, a significant amount of work has also been targeted toward millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless signals' distribution. 7,17,[20][21][22][23] Although the integration of optical and wireless technologies is able to simplify the backhaul infrastructure for the wireless networks, the implementation of this hybrid infrastructure is not straightforward. There are a number of issues regarding wireless signal transport, network layout, integration with existing infrastructure, and energy efficiency that have to be addressed.…”

“…However, it does not offer free spectral range (FSR) tunability since the comb line spacing is fixed by the cavity length of the laser. Another 60 GHz RoF system is based on external modulation [4]- [7]. This technology requires at least one optical modulator to generate two optical tones with 60 GHz frequency space which increase the complexity and cost of the system.…”
