Milk production, mortality, and economic parameters in the context of heat-stressed dairy cattle

Abstract: As climate change progresses, higher temperatures and longer periods of extreme weather are likely to increasingly impact the production and health of dairy cattle, in turn affecting farm-level profits and economic decision-making. This review identifies and summarizes the currently available research on the effect of climate-related heat stress or heat stress mitigation measures on milk yield, mortality, and economic parameters on dairy farms. A scoping review approach was adopted to map the volume, range, an… Show more

“…Although heat stress has been recognized as an important factor in dairy production, proportionally few studies have assessed its economic impact Vriezen et al 2021). In addition, animal welfare has become an important element of sustainable production that has evolved along with the transformation of animal production systems (Vargas-Bello-Pérez et al 2017).…”

“…The intricate interplay of genetics, nutrition, management practices, and environmental factors directly influences dairy cow performance and farm profitability. Among these factors, nutrition is a critical determinant of dairy cow health, milk production, and economic viability (Vriezen et al, 2021). Nutritional interventions in dairy farming encompass a broad spectrum of strategies aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of nutrient utilization by dairy cows.…”

“…Based on a meta-analysis conducted by Vriezen et al (2021), it was observed that the number of studies concerning an economic analysis of HS in dairy cattle is scarce. The range of losses in milk production conditions is difficult to estimate, as consequences of HS are usually masked by other factors, such as lactation, breed or age of animals (Mayer et al, 1999); furthermore, production systems, climate conditions, and market requirements differ.…”
