Milk of the Galapagos fur seal and sea lion, with a comparison of the milk of Eared seals (Otariidae)

Abstract: The milk of two tropical species of Eared seals (Otariidae) was analysed. In the Galapagos fur seal (Arclocephalus galapagoensis), milk fat content decreased and calcium content increased with age of the young (Table 1), while protein content (12%) and potassium content (167 mg%) remained more or less constant. Fat content was 32% during the perinatal attendance period, later decreasing to 25%, while calcium increased from 57 to 70 mg%. The fewer samples of Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus californianus wollebaeki… Show more

“…Over the first 30 days of lactation the amount of casein in the milk increased by over 50% (Table 2). This fits with the reported increase in milk Ca-content with age of the pup (Trillmich and Lechner, 1986). By day 150 of lactation caseins had roughly doubled.…”

“…Even tentative homologization of fur seal milk whey components with those of bovine milk seems premature, except perhaps for blood serum albumin. Alpha-lactalbumin appeared to be absent, which is as expected since fur seal milk does not contain lactose (Schmidt et aL, 1971;Trillmich and Lechner, 1986). Fur seal caseins were surprisingly similar to those of artiodactyls (Fig.…”

“…Variations in milkfat content, particularly among otariids, appear to be related to maternal attendance patterns (Costa 1991a). Lipid and, therefore, energy content of the milk of otariids increases with trip duration (Trillmich and Lechner 1986). Correlations between milk fat content and trip duration are complicated by the fact that otariid females with short trip durations are low latitude species and those with long trip durations are high latitude species.…”

“…Guadalupe fur seal pups double their mass within the first 70 days of life, Juan Fernández at 73 days and Galápagos and South African fur seals double their birth mass at 72 days (Trillmich and Lechner 1986;Gentry et al 1986). The similarity among these species is remarkable, given the wide difference in the attendance pattern of energy transfer from the mother to the pup.…”
