Migrant networks and integration: The transatlantic field of communication of German immigrant families in the USAbstract Drawing on a collection of 1000 letters sent by German migrants in the US we analyse the development and relevance of transatlantic and GermanAmerican migrant networks over a period of 150 years. We distinguish between "strong" and "weak" ties which are at the heart of these networks and identify the political factors that influence the different types of networks. Our study focuses on the connections between transatlantic and German-American migrant networks. We contrast elements of the 19th century, a period of dense migrant networks which developed largely without state interference, with the gradual weakening of both types of networks in the 20th century. The empirical detail contained in the as yet underexplored historical letter collection emphasises both the diversity of integration experiences and the simultaneity of a cultural attachment to the country of origin and economic and social integration in the country of residence over a long period of time.

There are, of course, long-standing interdependencies between European states, made evident at various epochs within Europe's migration history (Bade 2003); what is new is the way in which the EU now patterns and shapes aspects of both the internal and external dimensions of European migration policy (Boswell & Geddes 2011;Geddes 2008;Lavenex 2006). This article provides an overview of the literature connecting comparative political economy and international migration in advanced industrialised countries with a focus on the relationship between labour migration, labour markets and welfare institutions. Immigration flows and policies are considered both as independent (how migration shapes capitalist institutions) and dependent variables (how migration flows and policies are shaped by capitalist institutions). First, we discuss the impact of international migration on labour market institutions, welfare states and skill production regimes. Second, we discuss how labour market institutions and welfare arrangements shape migrant inflows and migration policies, notably via the structuration of interests of employers, organised labour and governments. We emphasise the ideas of liberalisation, segmentation, substitution and complementarity to grasp the relationship between immigration and labour market institutions.
