This article places the topic of “social innovation” in the context of the paradigm shift of the 1980s. This shift from Fordism to post-Fordism has led to a weakening of the model of the European welfare state. Social innovation has become an instrument to promote regional self-responsibility and entrepreneurial activity by local authorities. The concept of social innovation has become widespread among various disciplines and controversially used by them. Referring to regional and corporate success stories based on the commitment of grassroots movements and civil society has its shortcomings, as the new spatiality regimes show increasing disparities. The article shows the different lines of conflict in the discussion about social innovations and makes suggestions for the specification and delimitation of the concept. Using two case studies on social innovations from mountain regions of Switzerland, based on standardized interviews, including the results of a social network analysis, the article distinguishes between adaptive and transformative social innovations. The adaptive social innovations analysed did not result in changing the inferior position of the regions; however, they prevented even greater destabilization by mobilizing the dynamic actors in the valley to work together. This is helpful for ensuring that the urban majority continues to show solidarity with the population in rural and mountain areas. The constructive interaction between public, private, and civil society institutions is seen as the key factor of social innovation in the European peripheral areas to which most mountain areas belong.

“…En primer lugar, las migraciones de jubilación o migraciones residenciales (Kinget al, 2000;Salvà-Tomàs, 2002), también denominadas "lifestyl emigrations" (migraciones por estilo de vida) o "amenity migrations" (migraciones de recreación) Cuadernos de Turismo, 46, (2020), 319-347 en la literatura en lengua inglesa, en las que principalmente personas jubiladas o prejubiladas de clase media se desplazan a vivir a lugares considerados más agradables o que ofrecen una mayor calidad de vida respecto a sus lugares de origen. Así, Perlik y Membretti (2018) se han focalizado en cómo esta migración por estilo de vida que llega a áreas montañosas puede estar vinculada a cadenas de creación de valor global que promueven la regeneración económica pero que al mismo tiempo provocan el aumento de los precios de las viviendas y el desplazamiento de la clase trabajadora local. Aparte de conflictos de clase, estas dinámicas también las han estudiado en espacios rurales y semi-rurales otros autores centrándose en el conflicto generacional que pueden suponer estas migraciones entre población madura y población joven, como resume la siguiente cita proveniente de una entrevista a un informante clave en Inglaterra: 'Stratford atrae un montón de gente de mediana edad y de clase media, que tienen el dinero para disfrutar del estilo de vida de aquí… La gente joven no puede permitirse quedarse aquí, empezar familias y comprar casas' 2 (Morén-Alegret y Wladyka, 2019, p. 260).…”

El artículo relaciona la inmigración internacional con el turismo en municipios de menos de 500 habitantes de Cataluña, los denominados micropueblos. Primero, se analizan a nivel de Cataluña datos agregados sobre turismo e inmigración internacional en estos lugares. Posteriormente, se estudia a partir de entrevistas las relaciones entre tipos de turismo e inmigración en la comarca de L’Alt Empordà, focalizando en emprendedores turísticos de origen extranjero. Como conclusión, se destaca que en variadas ocasiones estos negocios responden más a estrategias vitales que a pautas de rendimiento económico. This article relates international immigration and tourism in municipalities with fewer than 500 inhabitants in Catalonia, i.e. small villages. Firstly, aggregate data on tourism and international immigration in small villages are analyzed at Catalan level. Posteriorly, the relations between different types of tourism and immigration in L’Alt Empordà county are explored thanks to interview analysis, focusing on tourism entrepreneurs of foreign origin. The conclusions under line that these businesses respond more to lifestyle strategies of these immigrants rather than a strict economic rationale.
