Migraine and risk of stroke

Abstract: Migraine and stroke are two common and heterogeneous neurovascular disorders responsible for a significant burden for those affected and a great economic cost for the society. There is growing evidence that migraine increases the overall risk of cerebrovascular diseases. In this review, based on available literature through a PubMed search, we found that ischaemic stroke in people with migraine is strongly associated with migraine with aura, young age, female sex, use of oral contraceptives and smoking habits.… Show more

“…6 ). Migraine is reported to have clinical or pathological relationship with the diseases or disorders which were already discussed in this review article as CNS interstitial fluidopathy which has altered dynamics of ISF/CSF including AD [ 99 ], sleep disorders [ 100 ], ischemic strokes [ 101 ], glaucoma [ 102 ] and Meniere’s disease [ 103 ]. Migraine has an aspect of neuroinflammation, and interstitial space is regarded as one of locations for inflammatory process in migraine [ 104 ].…”

“…18 Notably, in the above-mentioned group, LDL-C has been associated with vascular events according to a j-shaped pattern, showing the lowest risk for LDL-C values of 84-101 mg/dl (~2.2-2.6 mmol/L). 19 Given this background, in view of the demographical features of migraine and its association with vascular events in younger individuals (<45 years), 20,21 lipid abnormalities may assume an important role regarding the increased vascular risk of patients with migraine (mainly MWA).…”

“… 17 Indeed, migraine with aura is a significant and independent risk factor for ischemic stroke, and there is growing evidence of an association between migraine with aura and other CV disorders, including myocardial infarction, perioperative stroke, hypertension, venous thromboembolism, and atrial fibrillation. 18 - 23 …”
