Determinants of Livelihood Diversification: The Case of Community-Based Ecotourism in Oaxaca, Mexico

Diversification is a livelihood strategy that households use to survive and to absorb disturbances. Community-based ecotourism (CBE) is part of a set of sustainable options that are available to households for diversification. This paper analyses households’ capital assets that increase the probability of a family becoming involved in a CBE compared to other forms of diversification, and empirical evidence is presented for coastal communities located in Oaxaca, Mexico. Based on household surveys and a multinomial logit econometric model, the results show that the probability that a household decides to become involved in CBE increases for households with young people and those that have their basic needs covered by government programs or small agricultural production. Other forms of diversification are positively related to agreements within the community, woodfire use, and the presence of irrigated lands. Thus, CBE is determined by specific assets mentioned previously compared to other forms of diversification. Particularly, to promote CBE, tourism policies need to consider households’ human, social, natural, and financial capital assets and the associated programs in an integrated way to enhance community development.

A raíz de la crisis que se vive en el sector agropecuario mexicano desde 1975 y que se profundizó con el Tratado de Libre Comercio con América del Norte (TLCAN), las familias del ámbito rural se han visto en la necesidad de buscar actividades que les permitan complementar o sustituir los ingresos derivados de las actividades agropecuarias. Por medio de un análisis a los datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingreso Gasto de los Hogares (Enigh) de 2016, se evidenció que las remesas y los salarios no agropecuarios se han convertido en una de las principales fuentes de ingresos de los hogares rurales. Tras aplicar un modelo econométrico logístico, se verificó que uno de los factores centrales que le permiten a un hogar rural adoptar una estrategia de medio de vida fuera de la esfera agropecuaria es el nivel educativo de los miembros del hogar

This time, the results of a survey applied in the Municipality of Tecamachalco, Puebla, Mexico, in which the target population is focused on families with one or more people who have migrated to the United States, are presented. The methodology is based on the collection of financial information on family remittances per Federal Entity with data from BANXICO (Bank of Mexico) and on the application of 478 questionnaires in a fieldwork. Also, the Migration Intensity Index was consulted at the National Population Council (CONAPO for its initials in Spanish) to analyze the number of families in Tecamachalco that receive remittances. The contribution of this project lies in the information obtained in the phenomenon of labor migration in the state of Puebla, which ranks sixth in receiving family remittances and whose main labor market in the United States takes place in the Service Sector primarily. The states where Tecamachalco migrants mainly reside are: California, Texas, and New York, and the border cities with the greatest recurrence are: Tijuana, Nogales, Agua Prieta, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, and Piedras Negras. Similarly, information was also obtained on the impact of remittances as well as their use and shipping method.
