Might exogenous circular RNAs act as protein-coding transcripts in plants?

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are regulatory molecules involved in the modulation of gene expression. Although originally assumed as non-coding RNAs, recent studies have evidenced that animal circRNAs can act as translatable transcripts. The study of plant-circRNAs is incipient, and no autonomous coding plant-circRNA has been described yet. Viroids are the smallest plant-pathogenic circRNAs known to date. Since their discovery 50 years ago, viroids have been considered valuable systems for the study of the structur… Show more

“…Furthermore, direct interaction of eIF1A, an important protein of the translation mechanism, and both CEVd and peach latent mosaic viroid (PLMVd) has been proposed [ 28 , 29 ]. A recent work by Marquez-Molins et al has reignited the possibility that viroid RNAs might be translated [ 30 ].…”

“…One theory that has very recently been proposed is that viroids, which have always been considered noncoding entities, may have the capacity to encode peptides after all [ 132 ]. This has been supported by the discovery of open reading frames (ORFs) within some viroid genomes, and the association of HSVd and eggplant latent viroid (ELVd) with translational machinery in planta [ 132 ]. PSTVd has also been revealed to associate with ribosomes in tomato and Nicotiana benthamiana [ 133 ].…”

“…None of the encoded peptides had significant similarities with any of the putative peptides. Mutations in the ORFs showed a decrease in the subcellular localization of the encoded peptides ( Marquez-molins et al., 2021 ).…”
