Middle Pleistocene large‐mammal faunas from North Iberia: palaeobiogeographical and palaeoecological implications

Abstract: The rich Quaternary fossil record from the Cantabrian region (NW Iberia) is virtually restricted to the Late Pleistocene, with Middle Pleistocene findings very rare. This work presents the study of two Middle Pleistocene palaeontological sites in the Cantabrian region: Llantrales quarry and Mestas de Con mine, both discovered and first described in the 1950s but never studied in detail thereafter. The material was here re‐analysed and re‐evaluated. Taxonomic attributions have been changed in most cases and, co… Show more

“…Mestas de Con (800–500 ka BP) yielded a small‐sized lower canine attributed to Ursus sp. (Crusafont 1959; Álvarez‐Lao 2016). The only other two Middle Pleistocene sites in the northern fringe of the Iberian Peninsula (Punta Lucero: 600–400 ka BP; Gómez‐Olivencia et al.…”

“…hundsheimensis. A date of 0.8-0.5 Ma has been proposed for this site (Álvarez-Lao, 2016). The new study of the Mestas de Con assemblage (proposed age: 0.6-0.4 Ma) has yielded a more diverse assemblage including herbivores such as C. elaphus, Praemegaceros?, Capreolus cf.…”

“…The mid-Middle Pleistocene is only represented by a single site in the WP (Punta Lucero) and only two additional sites are known in the Northern Iberian Peninsula: Llantrales and Mestas de Con (Álvarez-Lao, 2016). The Llantrales quarry (Asturias) has yielded a small assemblage including Cervus cf.…”

“…The bird tracks are preserved in sandstone blocks of the Lerín Formation of 20.4 Ma in age (Agenian, early Miocene) according to the magnetostratigraphic data. The footprints, which measures more than 100 mm in length, was classifi ed as Uvaichnites riojana and related with crane-like taxa (Gruidae) (Díaz-Martínez et al, 2012, 2016. It is considered that the sandstone blocks are palaeochannels of a distal alluvial, muddominated fl oodplain.…”
