Middle mesenteric artery: an anomalous origin of a middle colic artery

Abstract: A case of anomalous mesenteric artery is reported. The artery was incidentally cannulated during angiography of a patient with a left renal tumor. It arose from the abdominal aorta between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. The artery then ascended directly upwards from its origin and supplied the transverse colon replacing the middle colic branch of the superior mesenteric artery. The anomaly must be a result of a anomalous concentration of unpaired visceral arteries in the developing embryo. This… Show more

“…In 1993, Yoshida et al [3] reported an MMA arising from the aorta between the SMA and IMA that was seen on angiography in a 49-year-old man with a left renal tumor. The anomalous vessel branched to supply the transverse colon, with a connection to the right colic artery arising from the SMA and to supply the left side of the transverse colon, the splenic flexure, and the proximal descending colon, with a connection to the left colic artery without intramesenteric anastomosis.…”

“…In all previously reported cases [1][2][3][4], it arose from the aorta between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries and mainly supplied the transverse colon. In the present report, a patient with a middle mesenteric artery supplying the cecum, the entire ascending and transverse colon, and the splenic flexure is described.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] In our patient, the middle mesenteric artery provided flow to the entire colon because of the chronic IMA occlusion. Preservation of the MMA at the time of EVAR was critical to prevent bowel ischemia.…”
