Middle and Late Miocene palynological biozonation of the south-western part of Central Paratethys (Croatia)

Abstract: AB STRA CT Middle and Late Miocene palynological biozonation of the southwestern parts of Central Paratethys (Croatia) is presented based on organic-walled phytoplankton. Nine characteristic palynozones of regional palynostratigraphic range are recognized, e.g. Early Badenian (Langhian) Cribroperidinium tenuitabulatum (Cte), Badenian (Late Langhian-Earliest Serravallian) Unipontidinium aquaeductum (Uaq), Late Badenian (Early Serravallian) Cleistosphaeridium placacanthum (Cpl), Sarmatian (Middle and Late Serrav… Show more

“…The same assemblage was determined in the ŠVM‐1 well (102.3 m). In the ŠVM‐1 well (Kováč et al ., ), the basal part of the Pannonian (Tortonian) sequence may be an bioevent equivalent of the Mecsekia ultima Zone in Hungary (Sütő‐Szentai, , ) or Mecsekia ultima–Spiniferites bentorii pannonicus (Mul‐Spa) Zone (Bakrač et al ., ), which developed from the Sarmatian (late Serravallian; ca . 11.5–11.3 Ma) zones.…”

“…In the M‐1 well, situated in the southern margin of the Želiezovce depression, the Pannonian (Tortonian) sediments at the depth of ca 1000 m belong to the Spiniferites bentorii pannonicus–S. bentorii oblongus Assemblage Zone, and can be correlated with the S. bentorii oblongus Zone (Sütő‐Szentai, , , ; Magyar et al ., ; Bakrač et al ., ) within the time interval 11.3–10.75 Ma. Towards the overlying strata, the Spiniferites bentorii coniunctus–Pontiadinium pecsvaradensis Assemblage Zone (900–800 m) was documented, and can be correlated with the Pontiadinium pecsvaradensis Zone (Sütő‐Szentai, , , , ; Magyar et al ., ; Bakrač et al ., ) with a time interval between 10.75–10.6 Ma.…”

As a consequence, a new pattern of crossed exchanges of organisms between the Mediterranean and the Dacic Basin during high sea-level episodes can be tested to explain the episodes of Lago Mare 1 (before the peak of the MSC) and 3 (after the peak of the MSC) in the Mediterranean, as argued by Clauzon et al (2005), Popescu et al (2009), Suc et al (2011), Bache et al (2012), Bakrač et al (2012) and Do Couto et al (2014).…”
