Middle-aged female sexual dysfunction and multimorbidity

Abstract: There was no evidence that multimorbidity was associated with sexual dysfunction in this sample of middle-aged women. The main factors associated with sexual dysfunction in women with multimorbidity in this sample were lack of sexual activity in the last month, physical inactivity, and anxiety. This highlights the importance of sexual activity, psychological health, and physical activity for a satisfactory sexual life in the case of women with multimorbidity.

“…Most of them (63 studies) were cross-sectional design, and seven 21,23,39,43,54,57,60 had a longitudinal design, from which we used data from the baseline assessment. The number of diseases included in eligible studies ranged from 4 to 40 (with hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and stroke being four most frequent conditions).…”

“…8 The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women in menopause is high, ranging from 35.9 to 67% among women from different Brazilian locations. [9][10][11][12] Urogenital changes resulting from hypoestrogenism have the potential to reverberate in postmenopausal sexual function, 13 changing the domains of desire, excitement, and orgasm, and impacting interpersonal functioning and quality of life. [14][15][16] Estrogen interferes with the female sexual function by having a central action in the hypothalamus and preoptic area that leads to a positive influence on motivation, mood, and sexual desire.…”
