Microwave Tomography Application and Approaches – A Review

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to review microwave tomography based on its field, application and antennas approaches. Researches on microwave tomography system have been done unceasingly for several decades especially in determine the dielectric properties for the material. Firstly, the dielectric properties and its influencing factors will be briefly described. Besides, although it has the potential to overcome other process tomography system, it still have some drawbacks. So, the general advantages and disa… Show more

“…ECT and ERT are known as electrical tomography, which was developed to visualize the permittivity and conductivity distribution inside the OI by measuring a set of capacitance and resistance between inter-electrodes mounted around the periphery of the OI [ 25 ]. In contrast, the MWT technique reconstructs the tomogram based on the measurement of the scattered electromagnetic field from the arrayed sensor nodes [ 26 ]. Despite having different sensing elements, researchers have pursued the optimal tomography method to measure the moisture distribution in numerous frameworks.…”

“…However, in the agricultural sector, and particularly for sensing of grain moisture, the MWT system is usually preferred. The MWT system is based on the relationship between electromagnetic behaviour and the material’s relative permittivity [ 26 ]. Regardless of the successful application of the MWT technique [ 31 ], it is well known to be complicated and costly.…”

“…The application of MWT for multiphase flow imaging requires a special sensor design, which addresses the challenges related to multiphase flow analysis described in Section 1. Since most published MWT sensor concepts [5] are not suitable for measurements in metal or ceramic pipes, we developed a new MWT sensor concept [27].…”

“…Thus, modeling the electromagnetic behavior is more complex. Both methods have been investigated in conjunction with medical, biomedical, as well as agricultural applications [3][4][5][6] and, furthermore, as alternative techniques for industrial process monitoring and multiphase flow imaging [7][8][9]. The application of EIT and MWT for multiphase flow analysis is a difficult task [9,10], especially in terms of instrument integration, sensitivity, measurement rate, as well as reconstruction stability and rate.…”
