Microstructure of (Y + Sm)–α-sialon with a-sialon seeds

Abstract: (Y + Sm)–α-sialon compositions with and without α-sialon seeds were hot-pressed at 1800 °C for 1 h and then heat treated at 1800 °C for 4 h. The effect of α-sialon seeds on the microstructures of (Y + Sm)–α-sialon ceramics was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that hot-pressed α-sialon ceramics with elongated grains can be fabricated by adding 10 wt% seeds. Through heat treatment, the seed-free composition could also develop into a similar microstructure with big elongated grains disp… Show more

“…It is clear that as the amount of seeds increases (excluding unseeded sample fired for 2 h), the average length of crystals gradually decreases from 35 to 12 lm, and the average width decreases from 17 to 2 lm, but the average aspect ratios increases monotonically from 2 to 6.25. This changing trend on crystal dimension with the amount of seeds is consistent with the previous study reported by Chen et al 24 and Brandon et al 25 .In general, the phase transformation and crystal growth of a-Sialon generally takes place by dissolution-diffusion-precipitation from liquid, 26 which could be also noted from Fig. 6(a).…”

“…In this way, ␣-SiAlON, which is isostructural to ␣-Si 3 N 4 , should also be able to develop into elongated grains. 16 However, in the conventional sintered ␣-SiAlON ceramics, few elongated grains can be found, and most grains exhibit an equiaxed morphology. This is because ␣-Si 3 N 4 is usually used as raw materials, resulting in the high driving force for phase transformation and too much nuclei produced.…”
