An extruded low-alloyed Mg-Bi-Al-Zn alloy combining excellent tensile properties (YS = 201 MPa, EL = 29. 4%) with high corrosion resistance (P i = 0.14 mm/a) for biomedical application is successfully developed in this study. The extruded alloy is mainly composed of dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grains (2.32 ± 0.12 µm) and strongly textured coarse non-DRXed grains, as well as certain nano-scaled Mg 3 Bi 2 precipitates (135.68 ± 27.86 nm). Note that most basal planes for non-DRXed grains are preferentially distributed parallel to the extrusion direction. The study explored the dependences of the properties and relevant mechanisms of the studied alloy on its microstructural characteristics in terms of grain size, grain orientation, and precipitates.

Degradable materials with low density exhibit unique applications in the petroleum equipment field. Herein, hollow glass microspheres (HGM)‐reinforced Mg alloy degradable composites are fabricated. The microstructure and degradation behavior of the composites are investigated using scanning electron microscopy, immersion tests, and electrochemical measurements. Then the influence mechanisms of the HGM on the degradation property of composites are further revealed. The results show that the addition of the HGM significantly reduces the density of the composites. Different degrees of chemical reaction between the Mg alloy melt and HGM wall happen during the fabrication of the composites, resulting in the formation of MgO and Mg2Si. From the corrosive morphologies of the composites, Mg2Si phase can serve as a microgalvanic cathode consequently inducing more galvanic corrosion. The interface between HGM and matrix alloy can serve as the initiation site for pitting corrosion and increase the exposed area of the matrix in the aggressive medium. The electrochemical measurements prove that the HGM can act a part in facilitating the exfoliation of degradation products. Consequently, the HGM greatly increases the degradation rate of the composites in the KCl solution. The current study provides a new insight for developing lightweight Mg‐based composites with quickly degradable performance.

Mg‐Gd‐Ni alloys with same Gd/Ni mole ratios but different volume fraction of Ni‐containing LPSO phase were prepared. The effects of the volume fraction of Ni‐containing LPSO phase on the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg‐Gd‐Ni alloys were systematically investigated. It was found that the strength was remarkably enhanced but the plasticity was decreased with the increase of the volume fraction of Ni‐containing LPSO phase. The electro‐potential distribution characteristic shows that the Ni‐containing LPSO phase had a lower electro‐potential than the Mg matrix, which was related to the existence of Ni in LPSO phase. Consequently, Ni‐containing LPSO phase was preferentially eroded during micro‐galvanic corrosion. High volume fraction LPSO phases accelerated the corrosion rate of Mg‐Gd‐Ni alloy. The detailed corrosion mechanisms were discussed in the present study.
