In this study, the effect of sigma phase precipitation in duplex stainless steel (grade 2205) pipe fittings collected from top-side process systems offshore was investigated under realistic loading conditions. This was done by conducting quasi-static and dynamic impact tests on 3" fittings with nominal outside diameter of 88.9 mm, nominal wall thickness of 3.05 mm and D/t-ratio of nearly 30. The fittings had a sigma phase level between 0 and 15 vol.%, and were loaded by a massive steel indenter with a hemispherical nose of 25 mm radius. In the quasi-static tests, the loading rate was 2 mm/min, while in the dynamic tests the impact velocity was varied between 5 and 10 m/s.A few dynamic impact tests on 2" fittings with an increased wall thickness and low sigma phase levels were carried out for comparison, while some 3" fittings were pre-charged with hydrogen before dynamic testing to examine the effect of sigma phase on cathodic protected subsea components. Abstract:The duplex stainless steel 2205 was heat treated at 750 • C, 850 • C, and 900 • C for increasing durations of up to 10 h. The samples were investigated through light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the volume fraction and morphology of the precipitated secondary phases. The samples were then tested via flat-top cylinder indenter for mechanical characterization (FIMEC) testing to determine the yield stresses that were found to be significantly affected by the different heat treatments. The yield stress evolution with heat treatments resulted in being correlated to both the relative volumes of the secondary phases and the morphology of the σ phase. The FIMEC test proved to be capable of detecting the effects of small amounts of secondary phases on yield stress in DSS 2205 and seems to be a promising technique for industrial applications.

ResumoO biodiesel, obtido a partir de um éster e um álcool na presença de um catalisador, é produzido pela reação de transesterificação e tem como coproduto a glicerina. A produção de biodiesel da Petrobras Biocombustível tem, em uma de suas etapas, a lavagem dos produtos para remoção do catalisador básico, metilato de sódio, por meio da reação de neutralização com ácido clorídrico. Devido a essa prática, a glicerina obtida é acidificada e contêm resíduos de cloretos, o que leva à corrosão localizada dos aços utilizados em determinados pontos do processo de produção. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho avaliou a resistência à corrosão do aço austenítico 317L e do aço lean duplex 2304, em meio de glicerina acidificada contendo cloretos. Todas as medidas foram conduzidas a 64ºC, visando simular as condições de operação da empresa. Para o estudo em questão, utilizou-se as técnicas de potencial de circuito aberto (OCP), polarização potenciodinâmica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). As análises mostraram que o aço AISI 317L obteve menor potencial de pite que o SAF 2304, logo foi menos resistente. Por meio do MEV foi possível confirmar a presença dos pites, sendo que as cavidades presentes no aço AISI 317L foram mais numerosas e profundas que as observadas no aço SAF 2304. CORROSION RESISTANCE OF AISI 317L AND SAF 2304 STEEL IN MEDIUM OF GLYCERIN ACIDIFIED CONTAINING CHLORIDE AbstractBiodiesel and glycerin, obtained from ester and alcohol in presence of a catalyst, are produced by the transesterification reaction. The production of biodiesel by Petrobras Biocombustível has, in one of its stages, the washing of products to remove the basic catalyst, sodium methylate, through the neutralization reaction with hydrochloric acid. Because of this practice, the glycerin obtained is acidified and contain residues of chloride, which leads to localized corrosion of the steel used in certain points of the manufacturing process. Austenitic and lean duplex stainless steels such as AISI 317L and SAF2304 are alternative materials of equipment of biodiesel plant which is in contact with acidified glycerin containing chloride. This work aims to evaluate the pitting corrosion resistance of the AISI 317L stainless steel and the SAF 2304 lean duplex stainless steel in solution of acidified glycerin containing chloride at a service temperature of 337K. For the present study, was used the open circuit potential techniques (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Analyses showed that steel AISI 317L had lower pitting potential that the SAF in 2304, therefore was less resistant. By SEM it was possible to confirm the presence of pitting in the steels. The cavities present in the steel AISI 317L were more numerous and deeper than those observed in the steel SAF 2304.
