Water pollution has always been a serious problem across the world; therefore, facile pollutant degradation via light irradiation has been an attractive issue in the field of environmental protection. In this study, a type of Zn-based metal–organic framework (ZIF−8)-wrapped BiVO4 nanorod (BiVO4@ZIF−8) with high efficiency for photocatalytic wastewater treatment was synthesized through a two-step hydrothermal method. The heterojunction structure of BiVO4@ZIF−8 was confirmed by morphology characterization. Due to the introduction of mesoporous ZIF−8, the specific surface area reached up to 304.5 m2/g, which was hundreds of times larger than that of pure BiVO4 nanorods. Furthermore, the band gap of BiVO4@ZIF−8 was narrowed down to 2.35 eV, which enabled its more efficient utilization of visible light. After irradiation under visible light for about 40 min, about 70% of rhodamine B (RhB) was degraded, which was much faster than using pure BiVO4 or other BiVO4-based photocatalysts. The synergistic photocatalysis mechanism of BiVO4@ZIF−8 is also discussed. This study might offer new pathways for effective degradation of wastewater through facile design of novel photocatalysts.

BiVO 4 porous microspheres were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal reaction. Various analytical techniques such as x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption-desorption were adopted to characterize their structure, morphology, and chemical composition. The results showed the molecular weight of PEG had a significant influence on the morphologies of BiVO 4 samples, and high molecular weight of PEG favored the formation of porous sphere-shaped nanostructure due to longer chain-like coordination complexes. The gas sensing properties of these BiVO 4 microspheres were further investigated, and all the four BiVO 4 sensors demonstrated the increasing responses with the increase of working temperatures, and reached their maximum values at 340 • C. The ethanol-selective characteristics of the BiVO 4 sensor synthesized by the assist of PEG1000 towards 200 ppm ethanol presented significantly higher gas response than all the other interfering gases. Moreover, the BiVO 4 sensor also displayed fast response/recovery, and excellent stability for 14-day continuous measurement. INDEX TERMS Monitoring, BiVO 4 , ethanol, gas sensor.

Conventional and Microwave Hydrothermal Synthesis and Application of Functional Materials: A Review

With the continuous development and progress of materials science, increasingly more attention has been paid to the new technology of powder synthesis and material preparation. The hydrothermal method is a promising liquid phase preparation technology that has developed rapidly during recent years. It is widely used in many fields, such as the piezoelectric, ferroelectric, ceramic powder, and oxide film fields. The hydrothermal method has resulted in many new methods during the long-term research process, such as adding other force fields to the hydrothermal condition reaction system. These force fields mainly include direct current, electric, magnetic (autoclaves composed of non-ferroelectric materials), and microwave fields. Among them, the microwave hydrothermal method, as an extension of the hydrothermal reaction, cleverly uses the microwave temperature to compensate for the lack of temperature in the hydrothermal method, allowing better practical application. This paper reviews the development of the hydrothermal and microwave hydrothermal methods, introduces their reaction mechanisms, and focuses on the practical application of the two methods.
