Microstructural integrity of a pathway connecting the prefrontal cortex and amygdala moderates the association between cognitive reappraisal and negative emotions.

Abstract: Cognitive reappraisal is a commonly used form of emotion regulation that utilizes frontal-executive control to reframe an approaching emotional event to moderate its potential psychological impact. Use of cognitive reappraisal has been associated with diminished experience of anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as greater overall well-being. Using data from a study of 647 healthy young adults, we provide initial evidence that an association between typical use of cognitive reappraisal in daily life and th… Show more

“…The UF is an association fiber extending from ventromedial prefrontal (vmPFC) regions to the amygdala, permitting bi-directional communication. Integrity of this tract has been associated with Stroop task performance (He et al, 2016; Schulte et al, 2012); more broadly, it is involved in emotion regulation (d’Arbeloff et al, 2018; Zheng et al, 2018). Disruptions in UF integrity have been linked to mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders (Lindner et al, 2018; Jenkins et al, 2016; Koch et al, 2017; Liao et al, 2014).…”

“…Of particular interest are previous findings suggesting alterations in WM structural integrity may be associated with symptoms related to anxiety and depression ( Baur, Hanggi, & Jancke, 2012 ; Kim & Whalen, 2009 ; Korgaonkar et al, 2011 ; Zuo et al, 2012 ). For instance, it has been suggested that the ability to successfully reappraise an adverse situation may be dependent upon the structural integrity of WM tracts providing connectivity between the amygdala and Prefrontal cortex (PFC) ( d'Arbeloff et al, 2018 ). Fractional anisotropy (FA) is a measure of the directionality of water diffusion in the brain and is commonly reported as a representation of the structural integrity of WM tracts ( Mori & Tournier, 2007 ).…”
