Microsphere drug delivery is a novel drug delivery approach for sustaining and controlling the rate and release of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Microspheres are the choice of drug delivery for delivering the drug at a specific site to release the encapsulated drug to treat various diseases. Microspheres drug delivery is an attractive dosage form in terms of its flexibility and sustaining the release as compared to other sustained and controlled formulations. Most of the antihyperlipidemic drugs come under BCS class-II, which leads to poor solubility but higher permeability, the oral bioavailability of statins categories drug possess less bioavailability due to the poor solubility; hence microspheres are the best candidate for delivering antihyperlipidemic drugs to the systemic circulation and improving the systemic bioavailability of drug for a longer period with lesser adverse effects. Therefore microspheres can be used in various medical departments like oncology, gynecology, radiology, pulmonary, cardiology, diabetes, vaccine therapy, etc. this review article focuses on recent different methods of preparation. The microspheres formulated can be later evaluated and characterized by a different procedure.

The aim of developing continuous or managed delivery mechanisms has always been to minimise dosage duration, resulting in improved patient compliance and less side effects. Microspheres have been shown to minimise dosage, side effects, administration frequency, and the risk of dose dumping. As a result, patient compliance has improved.Targeted drug delivery mechanisms aim for a specific location in the body to maximise drug concentration in a specific tissue or organ, thus improving the drug's therapeutic effectiveness. Microspheres have promised targeted or managed drug distribution in the body for decades, and have shown to be superior to traditional drug delivery. The goal of this review different aspects of the microparticulate drug delivery system along with types of microspheres and methods of preparation and different applications as targeted or controlled drug delivery system.

Over the past three decades, controlled drug delivery systems have become more developed and play a key role in pharmaceuticals formulations. There are many shortcomings in Traditional or Conventional drug delivery systems like for maintaining desired therapeutic drug plasma concentration there is a need for frequent dosing for particular drugs having shorter half-lives. Furthermore, because of frequent dosing requirement, there is poor patient compliance which causes fluctuation in plasma concentration of the drug. The limitations of conventional drug delivery can be overcome by the development of novel drug delivery systems, of which the controlled drug delivery can maintain constant drug plasma concentration by slowly releasing the drug over an extended period. Developing controlled drug delivery systems can also improve the systemic bioavailability of the drug, thus enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of the drug and better patient compliance. There are many different approaches for such controlled delivery systems such as liposomes, niosomes, ethosomes, phytosomes, microemulsion, and microspheres. Among all the approaches microspheres are more convenient as the drug is slowly released from the polymeric matrix and the polymers used are mostly biodegradable and possess no side effects. Therefore, microspheres can be used in various medicinal departments such as oncology, gynecology, radiology, pulmonary, cardiology, diabetes, and vaccine therapy. This review article focuses on recent different types of microspheres along with their methods of preparation. The microspheres formulated can be later evaluated and characterized by different procedures.
