Microscopic and Chemical Assessments of the Filling Ability in Oval-Shaped Root Canals Using Two Different Carrier-Based Filling Techniques

Abstract: Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the filling ability in oval-shaped canals using two different carrier-based filling techniques. Materials and Methods Twenty-four human mandibular premolars with one oval canal were selected. Canals were shaped using WaveOne Gold Primary and ProGlider. Samples were divided into two groups and filled as follows: Thermafil and GuttaCore. The proportions of gutta-percha-filled areas (GPFAs), sealer-filled areas (SFAs), and void areas (VA), at 2 and 5 mm, we… Show more

“…One more important advantage is its user-friendly and non-time-consuming nature [ 15 ]. A successful endodontic treatment depends on several aspects such as, shaping of the root canal system, cleaning, and a 3D root canal obturation able to provide an optimal coronal seal, reduce apical leakage, and entomb the remaining bacteria [ 24 , 35 ]. As far as we know, there is no information on the filing ability, physical properties, and antibacterial activity of the Ceraseal root canal sealer.…”

“…The penetration of the sealers into the dentinal tubule may represent an important factor to entomb the bacteria [ 24 ] and to favor an interaction between the sealer materials and the dentinal fluid; this may induce the formation of bioactive mineral crystals inside the dentinal tubules [ 40 , 41 ]. The sealers, BR and CS, showed intra-tubular infiltrations (tags) at 5 and 8 mm.…”

“…This study is the first work assessing the influence of pre-endodontic restoration on smear layer removal in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the root canal when using different irrigation strategies. In this study, the use of CBCT for the selection of the dental specimens permitted us to reduce the lack of homogeneity among the groups and subgroups [ 19 ]. Moreover, in order to standardize the irrigation procedure, each subgroup was irrigated under identical conditions using the same volume and flow rate.…”
