Microsatellite diversity associated with ecological factors in Hordeum spontaneum populations in Israel

Abstract: Microsatellite diversity at 18 loci was analysed in 94 individual plants of 10 wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum (C. Koch) Thell., populations sampled from Israel across a southward transect of increasing aridity. Allelic distribution in populations was not distributed randomly. Estimates of mean gene diversity were highest in stressful arid-hot environments. Sixty-four per cent of the genetic variation was partitioned within populations and 36% between populations. Associations between ecogeographical variables… Show more

“…This species has been intensively studied for the extent and structure of genetic diversity at a wide range of spatial scales from tens to hundreds and even thousands of kilometers (Brown et al, 1978a;Turpeinen et al, 2001Turpeinen et al, , 2003Volis et al, 2001bVolis et al, , 2002aVolis et al, , 2003Volis et al, , 2005Morrell et al, 2003). At large geographical scale, selection and colonization history are predominant evolutionary forces, and a great deal of information about these processes has been gained for wild barley.…”

“…The demonstrated genetic diversity in wild barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum, Turpeinen et al 2001;Baek et al 2003) suggests a not yet exploited wealth of novel exotic alleles.…”

“…Morphological, physiological and functional adaptations of H. spontaneum are based on an exceptionally high degree of genetic diversity across the genome which allows the growth in and the dynamic migration into primary and secondary habitats including many extremely unfavorable conditions (Nevo Beiles & Zohary, 1986). Populations of H. spontaneum from this area proved to be perfectly suited for the analyses of correlations between adaptive traits, genetic diversity and environmental factors (Turpeinen et al, 2001;Huang et al, 2002;. The measurement of hordatine accumulation in H. spontaneum seedlings revealed a wide range of hordatine concentrations between different populations and a close correlation between hordatine levels and environmental factors.…”

“…Within the wild populations, the genetic diversity is the highest in populations from the most highly stressed environments . A considerable degree of correlation between diversity at the molecular level and phenotypic variation influencing adaptive traits and individual fitness has been demonstrated using different molecular markers (Nevo, 1987;Pakniyat et al, 1997;Marmiroli et al, 1999;Turpeinen et al, 2001;Ellis et al, 2002;Liviero et al, 2002). The genetic basis of adaptation to environmental factors is still not understood in detail.…”
